Are you climbing the ladder of success or are you a few rungs short? Is making it to the top your goal or just a passing thought? How are you measuring your success?  Is the next rung just out of grasp?

The ladder is comprised of several rungs. Mastering the lower level is easy. Achieving the next level takes a bit more skill and as you perfect your skills, the rungs come more easily. So as Professionals how are you measuring your climb?

For some it is the number of listings. For others, it is the number of closings, and for others it could be more on personal level.

Even if you have been in Real Estate for eons, there is no magic bullet. The industry is ever changing. Just as we perfect one aspect, something new comes along. There is always something to be learned. Continuing education helps to make us better. Better realtors and often better people. We are growing, which is what helps us to become better people. Constantly evolving, changing, learning. What new thing have you discovered about yourself recently?   Has your attitude been a fundamental rung?

For me, the ladder seems to be increasingly easier to climb. Perhaps it is because I am flexible. Perhaps it is because I have been doing it for a while. Perhaps, it is because I view each new day as an opportunity. It may be an opportunity to meet someone new. Connect with someone old, or perhaps just get caught up. In Florida our market is certainly changing. We are beginning to see the buyers emerge after a long hibernation-like spring flowers they are making their way to the surface and beginning to bloom.

It may be a hard reach to get to the first rung especially for the Newbies but this is a great place to learn filled with wonderful people to learn from. Hang in there you'll make it!

What happens after you reach the top is another really good question.

Maybe someday I will clue people in on that one :)

Hint...You get to say bite me a lot. Wink. Wink.

I have a LOL for that one :)

Being at the top is another thing, true... you have to spend time STAYING at the top...so shooing people away who bother you is just a waste of time....kinda like what BB does....and I am learning about it....

Allison, I think it does get easier the longer we are in the business. Probably because we have learned more and made more connections. I don't think I've ever ranked myself by someone else's idea of success. I really enjoy what I do and I'm more motivated by a job well done than money. Staying focused and not letting negativity bring you down is also very important. My only goal is to help my sellers get their properties sold, I don't let anything sidetrack me from that. Very good post Allison.

BTW it does seem the market has picked up the last 2 weeks. I'm starting to get quite a few showings and offers are coming in. They're low, but at least they're coming in.

One man's silver is another man's gold as the saying goes. Guessing that how far you climb up depends on what matters to you most : ) Good post.

When I was "younger", climbing higher and higher was the only I knew how to measure my success. However, as I become more aware of my surroundings (personal measure of my success), I much prefer to have my family and friends around me. It's not that I do not care about climbing - I still like to, but now if they are not around me, it wouldn't matter. So, I tend to be more "measuring" - if you know what I mean.

Thanks Everyone.

The ladder can be metaphorical as well as physical.  Each rung is a task-goal-accomplishment or sale. The balancing act once you have achieved what you set out to is up to you. Our business has its ups and downs. Granted the longer you are at it-the easier it becomes. As you climb hold on tight and keep looking up!

How long is the ladder? It sometimes seems like you can climb infinitely. The it is open to discussion, are you really climbing at all?

That's what i love about this business - the higher you get on the ladder of success - the better you can choose who you like to do business with. The more professionals you can work with that you "fit" best with -the better service for you clients.

I think it is always great to keep climbing up the ladder of success.  The trick is knowing when you have achieved success.  There are lots of ways to climb to the top!

Interesting point Joan- Success is a personal measure of obtainable goals in my humble opinion.  Or learning a new skill and using it to achieve a goal. May your goals all be met!

Just remember:

 1. Look for ways to put yourself and others up

 2. Be nice to people on the way up cause you never know who you will pass on the way donwn...

I like to see what each person does to ensure that they keep climbing the ladder.  Let's face it, you can be athe top of it one year and then you have a few more rungs to climb the next.  any secrets of motivation out there.

Nice post Allison,

What also happens to many associates is they've climbed a ladder to only realize it's leaning up against the wrong wall.  Often times, self inlcuded, agents get caught on a speeding treadmill trying to stay ahead of their pocket book, fee dilemma's, financial skeletons, etc etc....

Agents typically get themselves chasing another deal to pay the interest on something they purchased before they had the money.  Leading with revenue versus leading on projected revenue is the best practise overall.  Getting back to the ladder on the wrong wall...  I'm generally referring to their business plan they have either chosen and/or have adopted.

Warm Regards,

Frank D'Angelo

I was using  the ladder image.  As a brand new agent (license May 2006) I was always picturing the top of that big ladder you posted.  I decided a better goal was to reach the the top of my "stepladder" and when I got there get out the extension ladder and try to reach the top of one extension at a time.  When I looked at all the top agents and how tall the ladder was I got discouraged.  I set a modest goal of six closings by my one year anniversary to reach the top of the step ladder.  (I'm in the northeast and things are really, really slow). I am happy to say that as of last month  I took my extension ladder out and now have a goal of going to contract once a month for the next year. I am off the ground and on the first rung so far this month.  I am very excited about finding AR - I think it is going to help me climb those rungs faster than I would have on my own. Thanks AR!!!

Allison: Thanks for the positive reinforcement!! Just curious...down your way with your current market would the goal I set as a new agent be too easy to achieve, a reasonable goal or heaven forbid impossible?  Trying to get an idea of how markets are in different areas of the county. Diana

I cannot compare apples to oranges Diana- but if you set the goal and work your plan there is a good chance you will succeed. Our market is slightly better than it was last year (whch was unbeliebably bad) but the need for affordable housing, insurance, etc, has had an impact. At least here.
