Birth of Cool Modernism Exhibit in N. California

The Oakland Museum is currently hosting a wonderful exhibit dedicated to everything ‘cool' in the 1950s-1960s.    From art to architecture, this San Francisco Bay Area modernism exhibit is sure to please fans of the atomic era.

Celebrating California's art and design at mid-century, this "Birth of Cool" Exhibit will feature:

  • Music:  "Cool Jazz" by the likes of noted jazz musicians Miles Davis, Art Pepper, June Christy, Dave Brubeck, Mel Lewis and Sonny Rollins.
  • Art:  Pieces by noted modernist artists including John McLaughlin, Karl Benjamin, Lorser Feitelson and Helen Lundeberg.
  • Design: Classic and timeless mid-century modern designers such as Charles + Ray Eames.
  • Architecture: Mid-century modern residential architecture by some of the most progressive architects of this era including A. Quincy Jones & Claude Oakland (who helped design many Bay area Eichler developments), Richard Neutra, Henry Hill, Pierre Koenig, and others.

The Birth of Cool is a limited engagement exhibit at the Oakland Museum of California.    The exhibit is schedule to run through August 17, 2008 and should not be missed by Bay Area modernist.    Ticket and venue information can be found online at http://www.museumca.org/.
