An Interesting Job Interview

By

How someone treats service people speaks volumes about their character.

There is a prominent business person who shared one of his hiring techniques.

He takes the applicant to one of his favorite restaurants and enlists the help of the  manager and  wait-staff.

During the lunch the business man is called away for an 'important' phone call

During this same time, the waiter "accidentally" spills a drink on the table.

Wine spill

Now here it the interesting part.

It is how this person interacts with the service person.

Was the reaction polite, respectable, a smile..a don't worry?

Or

Was it rude, unkind and demeaning?

Being on an interview can be stressful and this added pressure may tell a lot about the job applicant.

How will they treat others in 'lesser' positions?

REALTORS®, are  hired help but do not allow others to treat us like hired help.

Good way to interview.

Your thoughts?

Good morning Margaret. I like this very much. I was once being courted by the owner and top manager of another firm. We met at a restaurant and they were rude to the staff, kept the table a long time and didn't leave an adequate tip. I came back after they left and gave the waitress a reasonable tip considering the time the table was held. Needless to say that was the last conversation I had with these guys.

Hi there Margaret. What a great test. I also think the way someone treats service industry employees is a pretty good glimpse into their character. Everyone deserves kindness and respect.

Hi Margaret,
I totally agree with this premise.  I have heard of the "take them to a restaurant" technique but never the purposeful cause of an "incident".  Very interesting.

Sheila Anderson You turned the tables on this same type of situation.  You were  able to  eliminate the company because of how they treated the staff. Thanks so much for sharing. Your comment would also make a good post.

Assuming this interviewer was looking for someone who wouldn't loose their cool, I would definitely make the cut.  There is very little in this world that can make me fire off on someone in a service capacity.

I love it! On top of the business man getting some special insight into the job applicants true personality, the restaurant obviously has an excellent customer relationship with him and I am willing to bet that the service person gets a nice tip for their participation in the charade.

great post, when I was in the dating world, I would always observe how my date treated the wait staff, don't have to enlist assistance of Manager or wait staff involved to observe in that situation.

Greg Large Great point! Whether dating, or hiring, or taking on a new client...you can learn a lot about a person by observing their treatment of others.
