I never thought I'd have much to say about tornadoes, living as I do in Arvada, Colorado between Denver and Boulder. I've lived here 15 years, and only heard of small tornadoes way out east in the farm lands.  But as you know if you've seen the news the past couple of days, we have six or seven tornadoes on Thursday, and one of them was a biggie!

It went right through the town of Windsor, which is too close to the college town of Fort Collins for comfort. Afterward, thousands were without power, hundreds hurt and one killed.  I never did hear how many ended up homeless.  Shelters were open within a couple of hours.

That's all pretty standard news after a destructive event like a tornado, hurricane, or earth quake. But I heard on last night's news something different - something that speaks volumes about the kind of people who live in Colorado.

Just a day and a half after the tornado hit, it was announced that the shelters were empty.  Coloradoans pulled together and offered places for the displaced. That's Colorado people for you, always ready to help.

Colorado's wonderful people are just one of the many reasons I love living here!

I write posts on real estate issues and local events in the Denver metro area, especially those communities between Denver and Boulder, as a public service. My hope is to give people an idea of the 'flavor' of our community, in case they're new or moving to the Denver area.

I am a residential real estate agent, happily helping folks buy a house or sell a house in the beautiful and friendly suburbs northwest of Denver.

Joretta:  Your blog colors look great!  Those tornados seem to be getting stronger everywhere.  I get freaked now in VA whenever I hear there's a warning....and we used to not get so many warnings.

I used to live in South Carolina, and tornado warnings were pretty frequent.  My daughter was in elementary school and she got to where she could feel them even when everything looked nice and calm. We'd turn on the news, and sure enough - tornado in the vicinity.

At least in Colorado most people have basements.  Stay safe!

Joretta: as a Windsor citizen it is amazing.  Our little town has pulled together.  One of the reason I love living in Windsor is the sense of community, I always knew it was here and have to say that I am not overly surprised by the reaction of our town.  Yesterday was an amazing experience as we all pulled together to help our neighbors.  We were allowed into the devestated area at 12:00 to clean up and we stayed until we were kicked out by the curfew.  You had to be on a homeowners list to get in but once you were there you help them then moved to the next home.  When you live in an are of 16,500 people we are all neighbors.  We are also fortunate that there was only one fatality!  We don't have an early warning system so it is amazing that we did not have more loss of life.  The tornado struck on the last day of school, I would hate to know what our results would have been if the kids were already home.  Colorado as a whole has been awesome as well.  We have had to turn away help right now but we will need it down the road.  This will not be fixed in the near future.

Thanks for your note, Kendra - it's great to get an insider's story.  I'm sure you know that there are thousands of people who would take their vacation time to come help, but they keep saying the best thing to do now is stay out of the way, and send money to the Red Cross.

I do know it's true that there's such a desire to help when a crisis first happens, then everyone kind of forgets and moves on with their lives while the victims are still dealing.  So if there is a time in the future that you could use some help, I'll bet I could round up some people with pickup trucks and muscle and get them out there for a day or two.

Let me know!
