Do Kids' Opinions Impact Home Buying Decisions? What Kids Want...

Do Kids' Opinions Impact Home Buying Decisions?

A recent study by SunTrust Mortgage says the answer to this question of whether kids impact home buying decisions is a pretty definitive YES!

55% of home buyers surveyed by Harris Poll on behalf of SunTrust indicated that their children's opinion of a home was a factor in a home selection. And for Millennials... this number was an astonishing 74%! In other words, among millennial families buying a home, three out of four factored their children's opinion into their home buying decision.

Also interesting was the fact that 83% of home renters surveyed said that when they would buy a home they would factor in their children's opinions. Other studies have shown that 70% of GenX parents also make home buying decisions around their children. (As an early Baby Boomer, myself, I found this astonishing... as I can't ever imagine my parents asking me for my opinion on where we would live.)

What Kids Want In A Home:

  • Overwhelmingly (and not surprisingly) 57% of children want their own room.
  • 34% would like to have a large backyard.
  • 25% would like to be close to parks.
  • 24% want to be close to their schools and friends.
  • 21% would like to have a pool.

Nina, it is cute listening to the kiddos and their "take" on a home.    The room choice is important.

Good morning, Nina Hollander children are a main factor with decision making.... schools, sports, playgrounds and so many more factors are important with decision making and they all point to the children....

Good morning Nina Hollander, schools are very important for families with children, other than that, most of my clients make their decisions based on what's important to them.

Kat Palmiotti ~ hi Kat... I grew up in a home with one bathroom shared by all family members... now I show homes to families where each kid thinks to "normal" never to share a bathroom.

Brian England ~ hi Brian... I can tell you that I'm from a generation where kids didn't have that much say in major decisions like this.

Beth Atalay ~ hi Beth ... schools are always an important consideration... what is interesting about this study is how much "say" kids have in their parents' decision on what to buy, which was not the case for my generation.

You're absolutely right about that Nina Hollander

Joan Cox ~ hi Joan... no doubt kids are cute... but I wonder how much say they should have in the selection of a home. Selecting a room in a new home is one thing, opining on how their parents spend hundreds of thousands of dollars is another.

Barbara Todaro ~ hi Barbara Todaro... no doubt these all are important consideration for parents when choosing a home... what is interesting to me because it's not something I experienced as a child or did as an adult, is how much say parents give their kids in the selection of a home. I don't believe I'd do it now. And I have many clients who give their children no say... once they select a home they are happy to show the home to their kids; they are happy to let them choose their rooms... but to let them choose the home, not so much.

I've never experienced that with over a thousand new homes listed....

Barbara Todaro ~ hi Barbara... I've had parents bring young kids to all showings and ask their opinion on each and every house.

This doesn't totally surprise me, and I do notice the families we work with factor in their children's opinions. However, I've never seen the younger set make or break the deal based on a need.

Hi Nina Hollander so basically according to this study kids make the decisions for their parents when buying a home which I find this sad... it seems kids want "everything" in these days

Abby Stiller ~ hi Abby...it's hard to say if kids make the decision, but they certainly have much more say in the decision that when I was a kid or even a young adult.

Kids definitely affect the decision process Nina Hollander BUT my kids opinion had no influence on my decision when we moved as they were only 3 and 1 years old.

Bob "RealMan" Timm hi Bob... it wouldn't have mattered to my mother if I was 3, or 13... she would never have asked my opinion.

She first asked my opinion when I was 30 something and she was buying a coop in NY. I looked at it, said I didn't care for it, that she was nuts to buy on the fourth floor in an early 20th Century building with no elevator. And what she said to me was "she didn't care, she was buying it anyway." So much for offering an opinion even when asked!

I doubt I ever would have had any influence over my parents home buying either Nina Hollander . I probably would have been shocked had they asked even when I was 30.

When I worked with buyers who had families the first thing kids did at a listing is scramble to claim their bedrooms. Many wanted the master.
