Solution for Ugly Ceramic Floors is Luxury Vinyl Plank

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

This thought process is right up the alley of Debbie Gartner, and I thought maybe she had written an article about it but could not find it. It is probably included in something she has done about luxury vinyl plank flooring. Although I don't know why they refer to vinyl planks as luxury vinyl plank. There doesn't seem to be any bargain-basement vinyl plank. It is all "luxury," and seems such a farce.

However the thing about vinyl plank flooring is I did not realize it could be installed over ceramic. It is a solution for ugly ceramic floors. Remember how much we used to love ceramic? Now it seems to have fallen from grace. Vinyl plank is waterproof and performs well in humid tropical climates. Great point Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents! Installing over old tile for an emergency fix up is a great and inexpensive idea.

Erika Rogers I do tend to put it all out there going through the analytical thought process of improvements. Things talk to you, so it is good to anticipate those "voices." Not be stuck with the aftermath because you didn't think ahead.

Jeffrey Masich- Arizona Associate Broker,MBA &GRI I think you confused the word "emergency" with the word "permanent." Other than the fact each consists of 9 letters, which is great for Scrabble, the disassociation between the two is fairly dramatic.

That's the route I am going to be taking in my kitchen and dining area.  My son works in flooring at Lowe's, so I'm getting an education.

Myrl Jeffcoat I just had the installer over today to examine my ceramic. He said SPC products do not need the grout lines floated in the ceramic. It can be installed directly over the tile. There are different types of vinyl plank flooring. But you're probably learning that!

Tile is still very popular in my area. Over the years though, I have seen some very ugly tiles. The new tile looks a real headturners. I am hearing about vinyl plank and its waterproof features.

Hi Elizabeth- I do some of my best (and most expensive) thinking in the shower. I'm with you on no tile...way to hard on the feet. But, I'd take tile over carpet!

Elizabeth, sounds like it will be beautiful, and tile is tough on feet, but good in warm weather areas.

Debbie Reynolds I imagine eventually vinyl plank flooring will find its way to Clarksville. The SPC product is so thin and incredibly strong. It's about 1/4" thick.

Kathy Streib If my two choices were carpet or tile, I'm with you and would go with tile but now this has me thinking about covering the ceramic in my family room with vinyl planks. I'd have to do the job when my husband is out of town because he could not handle the disruption.

Hella M. Rothwell, Broker/Realtor® You would not recognize it. The funny thing is it seemed so upgraded when I bought it. I have found I do not like those granite counters in the kitchen nor the cabinets.

Joan Cox Luxury vinyl plank flooring will eventually eliminate ceramic tile, I imagine. It's much more versatile, not nearly as permanent nor messy to install, does not expand, holds up to humidity and dampness, and sooooo much nicer on your feet.

You might not have occasion to run around barefoot as much as I do, but when you get older, the pads on your feet get thinner.

Oh yes indeed, Elizabeth. I've used this product in a couple of houses I listed that needed work prior to selling and it's fantastic and looks great.

Regarding your comment #6.  Yes, I have learned that.  Money is saved in installation over other products, because they don't need to remove the old material beneath.

Myrl Jeffcoat If you don't get SPC, though, you might have to float your grout lines. You shoud google it. There is a video of one guy who bought vinyl planks on Craigslist (yes, the were installed in another house, they removed it and sold it to him). So first you've got a guy who doesn't even believe in buying new product.

He also did not know whether his grout lines would show through. I would not install if I did not know.

A year later, he could see some areas, and he uploaded a new video of that.
