June 6 is D-Day and My Day to Wish My Dad Happy Birthday.
For some, what they know of D-Day is what they learned watching movies such as Saving Private Ryan, which by the way was very well done.
And for those of us who are Boomers, many of us had family members who fought in World War II.
You can learn more about June 6, 1944, but to sum it up today marks the 74th Anniversary of the Allied invasion of German Occupied Western Europe.
There were over 5,000 ships, 11,000+ aircraft, 13,000 paratroopers, and over 150,000 servicemen. The numbers of those wounded, killed, or captured are too many to comprehend.
However, this was also my father’s birthday, who was in the Army Air Corps and was onboard the planes as a photographer.
On the morning of his birthday, June 6, 1944, he jokingly asked his officer if he could take the day off because it was his birthday. To which his officer said...Henry, you’re not going to want to miss this day.
He never talked about the horrors that he and the others saw. And today, there are very few left to share their stories.
Delray Beach has had as honored guests at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, World War II Veterans who were at the front of the parade. They without fail, always receive the loudest cheers!!! (which is as it should be)
If you don’t know about this day, I hope you’ll follow some of the links and learn more about it.
Happy Birthday, Dad.
