National Adopt A Cat Month In June

June is National Adopt a Cat Month and it's the perfect month to provide a beautiful feline with a loving furr-ever home since it's also National Homeownership Month. Homes aren't just for people! Cats love having a nice home too!

Spring season is known as "kitten season" with many kitties born and abandoned at shelters, adding to the millions of cats already in shelters hoping for their furr-ever homes. Your local shelter most likely has a gaziilion cute, cuddly newborns, in addition to all the mellow, older cats and everything in between.

If you have been thinking about adopting a cat, click here for for a great cat adoption checklist from AmericanHumane.org. And if  adopting is just not in the picture for you right now, click here for a great list things you can do to support this cause in your community from petfinder.com.

Bob "RealMan" Timm hi Bob... one year when I was in graduate school all I could afford was to feed me or a cat. Obviously, I had to feed me. But except for the 5 years I spent in college and grad school, I've never lived without a cat.

Our neighbor's cat comes by every day to visit and for a belly rub.  But, if we did get a cat we would definitely  adopt one.

Nina Hollander - I can think of lots of good reasons to adopt a cat. They are independent and not dependent on humans; however, they do like to get petted on their terms. And they let you know when it's time to quit. Cats are completely in control. In June many kids are out of school - great time to get a child a pet cat - teaches them responsibility. June has many graduations. Rather than give a gift card or money, why not give that graduate a pet cat to adopt - doesn't every teenager want to be loved, on their terms, just like a cat? Many brides and grooms get married in the month of June, having a pet cat could be the perfect wedding gift! Shall I go on?

Patricia Feager hi Patricia... I agree with your characterization of cats, which is one reason I love them. But I'd never give a pet as a gift... people need to be committed to caring for a cat or dog and I'm not sure that when they are unexpected gifts it's the same commitment.

It pains me to think that dogs and cats who only want to give you unconditional love do not have loving homes. It is the best therapy a human can get and it cost a lot less than sessions.

Debbie Reynolds ~ hi Debbie... abandoned dogs and cats and children are the most vulnerable creatures in our society... we have a moral obligation to help as much as we can.
