First, I apologize to Doctor Seuss (and all of you) for my play on a "Green Eggs and Ham" rhyme in my title.  All I can say is that I couldn't resist!

We are all moaning about high gasoline prices and how they are affecting us.  A quick scan of Active Rain turns up blog posts on topics ranging from which small car to buy when trading in a gas guzzler (Meyer Leibovitch's "A Car Guy's Dilema") to how have the high gasoline prices affected how we view and conduct our business (Kim Daugherty's "Are Rising Gas Prices Affecting YOUR Business?").  We have gasoline nostalgia posts like Loreena Yeo's I remembered when gas was .... We even have AR community groups dealing with environmental and "green" topics such as ECO-All-Stars~ GREEN Resources, Trends & Friends and Healthy Lifestyle - Green Lifestyle and I guess my point is that as gasoline prices continue to rise these concerns and issues will become even greater.

In my 5 minutes of daily spare time I have come across a few items that have been in the news recently that I think are worth sharing and passing on as we focus on our driving in both our daily jobs and for the summer travel season.  I have even included a suggestion regarding non-automobile gasoline use reduction.

When do you fill-up?

Fill up early in the morning or after sundown. Filling up mid-day, in the heat of the late morning or afternoon/evening will give you the least amount of gas for your dollar due to expansion of gas under heat. Plus more vapors will escape to hurt our air during the heat of the day too.

GO RIGHT! (...even if you are a liberal)

I thought that this was really interesting.  UPS has determined that their fleet saves millions of dollars a year in fuel by making as few left turns as possible. Given that REALTORS® spend lots of time navigating around their areas behind the wheel it seems that we are a logical group that could benefit from better route planning.  See if you can route your trips this way and you may not save millions of dollars like UPS, but collectively we probably would have a huge impact on gas usage and air pollution.  As a group we can have a HUGE impact!

Lush Lawns

As REALTORS® we know all about the importance of curb appeal (and if we don't, we should).  But could you survive if you asked your lawn service to come every other week instead of every week?  Would an extra week make that much of a difference in exchange for a 50% reduction in lawn equipment related gasoline use and air pollution?  And if you must have a weekly lawn mowing, does your landscape company offer a "green" service where they will cut your grass using manual or non-gasoline driven equipment? Lawn equipment is one of the biggest contributors to pollution.

OK folks, I am off my soapbox (painted green with no VOC paint).  Enjoy and GO GREEN!

13 Comments on Green Gasoline Habits - They do not just involve your car and they affect all near and far!

The underground storage tanks keep the gasoline at a pretty constant temperature.  Not much savings to be had there...

The other points are ok...

The UPS fact is interesting.  They had somebody study that.

Your fill up idea is not true.  It would have to get to just above freezing and even then it would be miniscule.

Lane/Adam:  Thanks for the input... I got that item from two different TV news reports over the past month or so, one of which I remember claimed to have performed a test.  Anyhow, they said that there was a "slight difference" in the volume, but that the more important difference was in the vapors released during fueling were greater at higher temperatures.  I can't defend the studies since I did not perform them and I doubt individually we are looking at a huge impact, but the larger cumulative impact could be more substantial.  Every little bit of environmental impact savings is worth it in my opinion... I am not suggesting that anyone run on fumes waiting to see if they run out of gas before sundown, but when I have the option to fill-up at cooler temperatures I figure that it certainly can't hurt.

I always have gone right first and it makes my wife mad.  When I heard about the UPS thing I had to show it to her.  Always made sense to me.

I like these ideas...had never thought of how the time of day could effect my gas consumption nor turning right.  Thanks for sharing!

Hi Ricki:  It's so funny... ever since I read this each time I am stopped somewhere waiting to make a left turn I keep thinking how many right turns would it have taken to avoid this.  That's why info like this is dangerous in the minds of obsessive people like me!  Happy Memorial Day!

Hi Diane:  What I wonder when I read stuff like about UPS with the right turn study is whether the cost they paid the consultants to do the study is outweighed by the $$$ savings.  LOL.  Happy Memorial Day!

Just to get an idea, I did a little experiment today...  I measured the temp of the gas in the gas can as I was pumping.  I came up with 65* as it went into the can from the nozzle (laser thermometers are cool!).

If the gasoline in the storage tank was at 58* and it warmed up to 65* before the measurement, then the error from the temp change would be 0.0092361 gallons for a 25 gallon fill up.  If the temp in the tank is warmer (likely) or the temp was cooler as it flowed through the meter (also likely) then the actual measured error is pretty small.  And many pumps actually comensate for this.

More expansion takes place in the fuel tank of the car than from ground to car.

Don't worry, I heard a news report and they were talking about it... and then i did a couple minutes with Google.

The vapor escaping the fuel tank is a bigger issue, but in many areas (like Atlanta) there is a vapor recovery system that pulls the immediate vapors back into the stations tank.  After the nozzle is removed, the car recovers and burns vapors if it is not compromised.

However, lawn mowers and other equipment don't have vapor recovery.

I like the right turn theory...

Steve:  I tried several times today to make right turns, and I almost pulled a muscle.  Very painful.  I am just going to have to keep making my lefty liberal turns... and just take the penalty.  Thanks for sharing.
