Interesting question. I'm parked here to see what all the suggestions are. What you are looking for is a real estate agent's dream in the current climate with fuel prices what they are and probably going up even higher. $4.00 here and that went up overnight. Crazy, how it jumps in one night.
Steven, Its hard not to want to do your part and get a fuel efficient car with the state of mind being green. I spent almost a year hemming and hawing over what choice I was going to make for my realtormobile. Now, I'm not a big gal 4'10 to be exact and I need a car that would fit me as well as others I was driving around.
The mileage on my car (suv) is average at best 14-19 mpg but my clients are comfortable. After many test drives and looking at the options I ended up with an Audi Q-7 and very happy. I wish you the best in your decision. Do you really drive all around the island or do you stay in Wailea mostly?
Christian had a point with the numbers, not saying I wouldn't love to have one of those cute little smart cars. It boiled down to the comfort factor for my customers for me.

I agree that it's important that our client's are comfortable. We are currently at $4.41 gal. Over $5 gallon I am betting on is the new price up there with the Europeans. I am looking down the road so there has to be that magic car.

I am a Broker Associate with Wailea Makena Real Estate Inc. and am very happy that you are also going green. I bought a Toyota Camery Hybird a couple months ago and boy was I glad I drove a suburban prior and was in a CCIM class discussing the rising cost of oil and really thought you know I should get out of this thing, so glad I did. I think that we all should be looking into other choices and anything that saves the water and enviroment I am all for. Builders in Hawaii are looking into some great alternatives on building there green contact me for some of the great ideas being explored. Jill McGovern

Im assuming you wont be happy with a horse and carriage??? :-) My idea of going green is getting a bike. Cant haul anything with it, but I get great gas milage! LOL
I'm with those that suggested the Toyota Prius...that is going to be my next car...saying goodbye to BMW!
Great posts everyone! I'm currently in a lease on a Sonata, and I thought I would get better mileage. It gets about 22 avg in the city....guess that's not all bad, but when it costs $53 to fill it up, ouch!
Thanks for the info on the Camry Hybrid. My lease is up next summer, and it will really be about the price on the lease and the price on the gas.....and I sooooooo glad I did not get the SUV!!!
Toyota Prius. My sister in law has one. She's getting a phenomenal 45 mpg. Not too bad.

I just got rid of the horse. feed was to high,actually it was my daughters. As far as green my compost pile is happy. I do have a mountain bike that I put to use.

I am looking for a new car, too, while thinking about gas mileage and comfort for my clients, but at the same time, sporty looking. I have been renting cars for a couple of days at a time to make sure I really like what I buy. You might try that. I am leaning toward the Nissan Altima. Check out the reports on edmunds.com. It has impressed the experts who are now rating it higher than the Accord and Camry. Good Luck!

I heard something pretty interesting the olther day. If you track the dot.com bbom, there was a bubble and when it busted prices dropped by almost 75%. There was a housing bubble and when it is all said and done, prices may drop by as much as 75%. There is also an oil bubble. Look for prices to drop, significantly? I don't know. I think I heard this on the radio, but I can't remember. Maybe it is just wishful thinking? Thanks
Interesting reading in this post. I have a honda CRV that gets 23-25 MPG, has almost 100K miles on it, is paid for, and runs like a dream. I also have 2 teenaged male drivers. Insurance sucks. Though I would love a hybrid ( I have always thought the Prius was cute, even before it was cool), I just can't justify the cost of a new car when this one runs so well. As someone above said, need to look at the total picture, and see how the numbers pencil out.
We all need to think about how we can go greener, and hybrids are one way. Here ingreater Los Angeles, as in most cities I imagine, it is rare for anyone to drive less than 70MPH on the freeway. If we went back to 55 PMH on the highways as we did in the 70's it would improve the gas situation, as well as safety.
While many disagree, I think if we all do our little bit, it adds up.

I agree the total picture will be different for each of us. With oil in demand in the world it is not going to get any better. So I am looking at adjusting.
