Family Foto Friday -
A New AR Group from Judi Barrett Idabel OK
Have to say I love the idea of this new group started by Judi Barrett on June 8, 2018. And, in addition, I am very proud to be the second member!!! Want to join? Family Foto Friday is the link to click!
Here is my entry - don't want to wait until next week so my first Friday Family Foto Post is going up now!!!
Here A. (red Birthday Crown) is sharing his new 1920's Mandolin with his older sister O. (camo hat), younger sister Y. (dark shirt) and Cousin V. (red pants).
A. expressed an interest in playing a Mandolin. He had experience on different instruments from music class. Although his choice was the mandolin, the one in class was not the right size for his hands. The teacher suggested a ukelele but he didn't like the sounds produced! I was fascinated that a five-year old would know what sound he preferred when playing an instrument.
So I set out to find one for him. I was able to get a small sized one to match his now newly six-year old hands.
The fun part of delivering the Mandolin to A. was watching how he went around from family member to family member to let each one touch it. When he got to the "little" kids, he made them sit down to be careful of the instrument. I can't wait until I visit them again and hear his progress as he learns his Mandolin.
How did I get it? Started out at Mandolin Cafe looking in the Classified ads there and one day, the perfect response arrived from Kevin Dohse, a professional musician in Wisconsin.
"Lynn, great thing you are doing. I hadn't planned to sell this, but I have a '20s Supertone mandolin. It is very light, short (13") scale so good for little hands, and needs light strings, also good for beginners. The neck is also small which is good. It is a mandolin I lent to friends that wanted to learn before they bought one. I like the fact it will be used by a 6 yr. old and hope it would inspire a life-long love of music."
We easily made a deal via email and then arranged the shipment as well. Since then, I have been privileged to maintain a lively correspondence with Kevin, almost a parallel to the book 84 Charing Cross. It has been great fun!!!
During the summer, Kevin plays on river boats near the area of Wisconsin where he lives. Certainly looks enjoyable ...
