ringgg Friday I called a friend of mine, Mike, to let him know I had an offer on one of his bank owned (REO) properties in Murrieta Ca. and also ask if he wanted to meet for lunch and I would present the offer. Voicemail

So I call his office and tell his secretary who I am and ask if she would get Mike on the phone as I couldn't reach him on his cell phone. She informs me Mike is busy and that I should Text message Mike on his cell phone. Hmmmm, Mike's people running interference for Mr Bigshot by telling folks to text message him on his Phone.

Now I'll admit I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but it doesn't make sense to me to take a perfectly good phone and turn it into a keyboard plus I don't want to decipher the abbreviations people use when texting. Why can't we just talk?

So off I go to see my Transaction Coordinator Nora, My People, and have her send Mike's People an E-Mail informing them to inform Mike we have an offer on xxxxx property and since he and I have only known each other for 17 years I was going to buy lunch but since he wouldn't answer his phone the free lunch was off the table at this point.

Twenty minutes later my cell phone rings and when I look to see whose calling I burst into laughter as it's my good old friend Mike ringing me up. Go figure!!!

So in keeping with the electronic age we all live in I did what any good friend would do in this situation.

 VOICEMAIL !!!!!!!

i love technology...i love email...i love my phone with email and internet...i think it's so convenient...that's probably how your friend Mike is...don't be offended.

Sounds like Mr. Big shot has a good gate keeper.  You should try to steal her away!

KIM, I wasn't offended as Mike and I have been friends for a long time. The point was if we have a phone shouldn't we just answer it and actually have a conversation. Mike laughed his butt off when I didn't answer his call.

Mel, She is a good gatekeeper but Mr Bigshot wasn't busy when I called and given the chance I will steal her.

Cameron - I'm right there with you.  A phone is a phone first, and foremost.  I love the fact that my Treo can open a lcokbox, keep my contact list handy, and all of that other great stuff.  But, I like to hear someone's voice and do business with people.  Just the other day I had to send an email for a lockbox code to the listing agent upon that request in the mls.  After not receiving a response for two days, i called the office phone # to hear the same message every time (five in two days) letting me know how important my phone call was (yeah right!), but due to their busy schedule and the # of calls I should send an email to a different address with any questions pertaining to the showing directions on a property.  I'm still mad!  After listening to the message a few times to get the address right so i could send that request via email, i then waited to see if I could leave a mesage.  The directions prompt you to do so, but guess what?  The voice mailbox was full (You guessed it!)  Now that I'm done ranting, thank you for listening.

CAMERON - I'm still a big fan of the phone.  Unfortunately, with called id and voicemail, it can be difficult to get through to someone if they don't want to answer.  I'm ok with texting, but it is not my preference.

It is amazing how we are all doing so much more with technology:basically more phone tag, more voice-mail and more texting! After about 4-5 times you can finally connect.

Cameron:  The best text message I ever received was from my brother.  A texting addict.  I can't stand texting.  Anyway, it read, and I quote, "Call me."  ??????????

I hate text messages. And I always try to meet a person face to face when presenting an offer. I like to meet who I'm dealing with.

Sorry everyone, I tried to comment this morning but AR gave me the Boot again.

ADAM, I hear you and I promise to never send you a text, I'll call.

MARY, Amazing with all the techonolgy it's still hard to reach people.

CHRIS ANN, Now that's a classic.

JL, Now that's old School and I love it. Present an offer in person, what a concept!!!!

It is something different and exciting.

By the way, he was traded to the Twins.

Cameron...

Oh wow, you hit on one of my number one pet peeves ... why do we use those dand small keys and peck away when the phone os a machine for TALKING? And on top of that, most companies charge more for TEXT than TALK?????

05/25/2008 07:34 PM by Richard Weisser Coweta Fayette Real Estate ERA United Realty

RICHARD, Even my kids quit texting me as it takes too long for me to respond and I thought I taught them how to TALK on a PHONE when they were young.

05/25/2008 07:49 PM by Cameron Wilson: Murrieta/Temecula/ Menifee California Real Estate (Century 21 Tri Valley Realty)

Ha ha ha ha, that was mean of you letting him go to voicemail.  Just kidding.  I am always amazed by the number of people who are surprised when I answer my phone..... isn't that easier that listening to a voicemail and having to call back????

I think so.

And texting just takes too long....

Cameron, I am with you. My daughters text message me now rather than call and I hate it. What happened to picking up the phone for a personal conversation.

05/26/2008 10:23 AM by Becky Respess, ABR, CRB, CRS (Broker/Associate North Texas GMAC)

Cameron, speaking of phones, I can't tell you the number of times I've forgotten to dial the "1" to make a call on my land line or fax machine.

Cameron...

I'll tell you why the young guys lke it ...they can ask a girl out without that awkward fear of rejection!

Cameron;

I'm a pretty big fan of technology, but I have to agree...it will never replace simply human interaction. You can't read body language or voice inflection in a text message. I also think that all of the texting and abbreviating our youth is doing is eroding their language skills. I'm really starting to wonder if most of them can still conjugate a full sentence. Will the next generation of newspaper writers believe that L8r is an appropriate substitute for later? Oh yeah....never mind, we won't have newspapers by then.

But who remembers the "Party Line"????   Now that was fun!

07/14/2008 09:44 PM by Sherry Scales,GRI,ABR,SRES,CLHMS,REALTOR (RE/MAX Austin Skyline)

Oh party lines were awful - neighbors either listened in or would hog the line!

07/14/2008 10:05 PM by April Hayden-Munson Realtor, Southeastern Wisconsin (RE/MAX Realty 100)

Party lines, yes I remember!  They were terrible, once I remember we were on an 8 party line.  We never got to use the phone and had to pay more money for a 2 party line.  But, I hate the texting and all of the other stuff associated with the phone.  My son, who is 15 is constantly texting someone and it drives me CRAZY!

I'm trying to get over it, but it's hard.

07/19/2008 03:25 PM by Janie Masterson Realtor GRI CLHMS Home Marketing Expert Clarksville, TN (Crye-Leike, Realtors)

I remember the party line but the biggest problem was you never could get a good drink at the party.

Texting is one of my biggest pet peeves but sometimes it does become necessary. Hearing someone's voice is nurturing especially if it's from an old friend.

07/21/2008 03:31 PM by Diana Perez REALTORĀ®/Property Manager (Majestic Properties - Hollywood)

:-)  BTW, Cameron, I do not have a landline.  To be honest, no use for it, I have excellent service, and have been in elevators and people around me say, oh, that wont go through.  But I call and carry on normal conversation.  It all comes down to the service - and it is not Verizon!  So  yes, I CAN HEAR YOU NOW!!!  Smiley
