The Kaufmann House in Palm Springs

The Kaufmann House

A truly breath taking monument to the modernist movement in the Post-War era, the Kaufmann House establishes a firm foundation for beauty, deep in the heart of the Palm SpringThe Kaufmann House in Palm Springss Desert community.  Designed by the famous architect, Richard Neutra, this home breathes life into the desert, while thriving off of the connection made between man and nature inexplicably intertwined through the sheer genius of the design.

Playing an integral paThe Kaufmann House in Palm Springsrt in the appeal of this home, the desert creates a surrounding landscape that serves to frame the architectural masterpiece through varying views from which to enjoy the splendor of the mountains and the desert, offering you a chance to connect with nature on a deeper level with the boundaries having been vastly decreased.  The sense of wonder is enhanced by the extreme decor of open spaces that allow for freedom of movement and an uncluttered, uncomplicated mix of modern efficiency.

The awe inspiring San Jacinto Mountains provide a tranquil backdrop for the property that was commissioned by Edgar J. Kaufmann, a prestigious department store owner in Pittsburgh.  Chosen as a desert retreat from harsh winters, Kaufmann relied on Neutra's expertise to create a home that portrayed the intertwining yet vastly different lives of man and the desert.  Owned at different times by a number of different notorious celebrities such as Barry Manilow, and Vidal Sassoon, the Kaufmann House underwent slight remodeling with each pass in ownership, to finally reveal a diamond, sparkling with life in the midst of the desert setting.

Boasting over threThe Kaufmann House in Palm Springse thousand feet of square footage located on over two acres, the Kaufmann House includes five bedrooms and five and one half baths.  An outdoor pool is visible from nearly any location within the home, giving an unadulterated view of the surrounding landscape as well.  With most of the walls being comprised mainly of glass, lighting is natural and perfect for any mood, following the rising and setting of the glorious Palm Springs sun.

Providing a solitary yet welcome feeling through lush desert plants and open walkways leading to airy and glass encased rooms, this amazing structure has stolen the hearts of millions as it became one of the most widely known examples of mid-century modernist architecture in America.  With a reputation such as that, becoming Christie's star piece was readily expected.

Garnering a personal web page, this home is given an outstanding review of the design and location.  Your choice of viewing either still pictures taken by a notoriously famous photographer, or viewing a video giving you a rare view of the sun rising and setting on the Kaufmann House. With an estimated worth of fifteen million to twenty-five million, the expectation was for a pricey auction.  Beginning at $9,000,000, the bidding war quickly gained momentum and rose at a rapid pace, finally culminating with the final bid, called in by phone, for $15,000,000.  Long respected as a vital piece of American architectural history, this 1946 masterpiece is now considered one of the highest worth pieces of land. If you are looking for homes in the Palm Springs area, give us a call and we would be glad to help you find the home of your dreams!

Not my style of home in the mountains, but in the desert, AWESOME... I love this kind of architecture, just so unique and easy flowing.  I will have to check out the web page.  There are some of the coolest homes in the Palm Springs area, my husband and I frequent the area and I love peeking in on some open houses.  One day I will buy one.
