French Cafe and Bakery in Carlsbad VillageIf you are a fan of la cuisine Francaise, you will be thrilled to know about two eateries in Carlsbad Village.

While Julia Child is no longer with us, fond memories of her French cooking remain, and whether you are more of a pastry and dessert fan, or prefer a charming French bistro doesn’t matter since Carlsbad Village has you covered for both.

First, devotees of French patisseries will love The French Bakery and Café. Their almond croissants are to die for, and if you can find your way past the pastries and other goodies, you might enjoy a selection of Les Omelettes for your petit dejeuner, or drop in for lunch and choose one of many Les Sandwiches. Located just behind the Mikko Japanese Restaurant on Carlsbad Village Drive (south side) just west of the I-5 freeway, you can’t go wrong with this charming and tasty bakery. Yep, it’s in a strip mall, but sometimes the best surprises are in the plainest of locations. Call 760-729-2241 or visit them at 1005 Carlsbad Village Drive.

Le Passage French bistro in Carlsbad Village French Cafe and Bakery in Carlsbad VillageYou can also enjoy a more upscale lunch or dinner and take yourself to the banks of the Seine and dine at Le Passage, on State Street in the heart of Carlsbad Village.

This quaint French bistro makes it easy to imagine yourself enjoying Le Diner on the Left Bank in Paris, whether you are seated indoors or on their charming outdoor patio in the back of the restaurant. Call 760-729-7097 for more information and for reservations.

Their website is under construction, but here is an article about the restaurant when it opened in October 2005 (I've met the owner, Michelle Rocca, and she is a charming woman and talented chef). Lunch and dinner are both worth checking out, with a menu that changes periodically and daily specials.

Stay tuned for more on a favorite restaurant in Leucadia, Le Papagayo, and my interview with owner, Francois.

Jeff - it's always so nice to have the Insiders View of local restaurants. Here in St Pete, Chateau France has just opened a bistro - I only saw the signs this morning, so I'll have to check out if this means they're now serving lunch.

Jeff, I think it's time for me to head out to Carlsbad.  These restaurants look very inviting.  I'm ready for my late with a chocolate croissant.  Yum!

Sharon - I enjoy discovering new restaurants, especially those that have been around for a bit and I have not yet enjoyed.

Come on down, Irina. I'll treat. The only downside to the bakery is there is no outdoor seating, so it that regard it is not quite Paris!.

Gena - ditto here. What is especially nce is that it is not a formal high-end restaurant as some French places can be.

Diane - I think Carlsbad has a fairly impressive range of restaurants given the size of the town. No, we are not LA or NY but there is enough to suit most tastes and budgets.
