The Coastal Studies Institute (CSI) has been awarded a $5,000 grant from Dominion Energy North Carolina to create and offer educational programs focused on energy literacy and environmental stewardship. The project is funded by the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dominion Energy North Carolina, as one of nearly 130 organizations receiving a total of $1 million for environmental education and stewardship projects across the country. CSI’s project will take place during the 2018-2019 school year and target 8-12 grade Physics, Physical Science, Earth and Environmental and AP Environmental Science classes in northeast North Carolina. It will focus on developing students’ awareness and critical thinking skills related to energy, explore consumer-available energy technologies and their respective local and global impacts, and expose students to new and emerging renewable energy development to create informed future consumers and decision makers.

CSI’s expertise in ocean energy research combined with its strong commitment to public education and engagement uniquely position it to provide relevant and effective energy literacy programming. With this grant, CSI’s energy literacy program will reach approximately 220 grade 8-12 students across Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hertford, Hyde, Pasquotank, Perquimans and Tyrell Counties. The program will include hands-on, experiential learning at CSI, as well as pre-visit and post-visit classroom materials to best equip students for the topics covered during their visit and reinforce important topics after the visit for lasting impact. It will also allow CSI to continue to serve students across the full spectrum of income and resource access, equitably preparing the next generation of energy consumers and decision makers to face future coastal hazards in their increasingly vulnerable communities.
