Talk Story in Hawaii is a Foreign Concept on Mainland

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

If you are an impatient person, you probably will not like the pace of life in Hawaii. On the mainland, if you wait in a line to ring up a purchase and the person in front of you has finished their transaction, yet stands there talking to the clerk, you might get irritated. Sigh. Shuffle the goods you're holding from one arm to the next. Narrow your eyes in disgust, glancing around to find another sales clerk.

You're in a hurry, damn it. Why don't they stop talking? How rude is this? And you play those tapes over and over in your head until you finally throw your merchandise on the counter and stomp out, muttering you'll never walk into that porn shop again.

But Hawaii is different. You can read more in my personal blog today at this link: What Happens When You Talk Story in Hawaii.

I love the "talk story" concept and often advise my buyers to do just that when deciding whether or not to make an offer on a property--walk around on a weekend day and "talk story" with neighbors you might meet.

Elizabeth, was in the store the other day, and someone was CHATTING with the clerk, and I was in a hurry....it is annoying!

Lottie Kendall This is a different concept in Hawaii. You do not get to purchase a bottle of water without an interaction with the clerk at the cash register, LOL. You will tell that person where you are from, how long you have been on island, and that person will share personal details with you. You need to acknowledge that clerk as a human being before consummating your transaction. But Talk Story is not limited to transactions.

Do you slow down when you get to Hawaii?   Thinking it would take a while to do so!

While I never heard the term "talk story" before, I absolutely know what it is in Hawaii.  Each and every time I have visited the islands, it has taken me about 4 days to unwind enough that I was into the slower, calmer pace.  And, I love all the little philosophies and beliefs the island people have.  What is excruciating to me, is returning to mainland, and having to pick up the pace of our rat race.  Every time, I have asked myself, What am I doing here?

Joan Cox Yes, I am in synch the moment I get here. It used to take me a few days but anymore. Smell that lovely metallic vog, and I'm in heaven! I don't sit in front of my computer all day like I do in Sacramento. I actually go places. I tend to spend more time writing and more time talking to people. It's just not as fast paced as Sacramento.

Myrl Jeffcoat You know what you're doing here, LOL. You have tons of family around you. That's your reason to stay in California. I say the worst day is Kona is better than the best day elsewhere.

Hi Elizabeth- I'm not familiar with the term but feel as if I know the concept because it's similar to what I experienced growing up and living in Houston. I don't know if it's as ingrained as in Hawaii but for the most part, when you're venturing out in Houston, you can go almost anywhere and anyone you meet will treat you as if they've known you for years. And we share our stories with each other. I don't know if it's still like that because we've had so many people from different parts of the country "infiltrate" the city.

Everything is so fast-paced these days we need to remind ourselves to just slowwwww down, don't we?

Kathy Streib The thing is everything has become so depersonalized. All of our interactions are specific to our own goals, and we tend to overlook the fact that people are real. It is as though we are here to perform a task, and our private life is private.

Removing our personal connections to each other is disturbing. Being in Hawaii means I reconnect with the human race.

Carol Williams Yes, we ought to slow down but nobody cares. Bottom line. And that's a bit sad.

Hi Elizabeth,
I'm happy to be at a place in life where I can slow down and smell the roses.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents you do have a way of humanizing your posts and I have finally figured that slowing down is so much more enjoyable...wondered how you did with all the volcano eruption & whether the bad air floated over to your area?.

Ginny Gorman Did not really feel the 12,000 earthquakes over 30 days but the vog was so bad there were RED days I had to close doors, windows, turn on AC and run the Dyson to purify the air. Before I even read email in the morning I checked the air quality in Kona. Yellow days were OK but orange days I went inside. When you can't even see the ocean, that's bad.
