Long Island WaterfrontThe great diversity of waterfront homes on Long Island would come as a surprise to many people, including Long Islanders that have lived here their whole lives.  While there are many ties that bind us together, there are also a number of differences that segment us into our own sort of sub-cultures.  The key lines of demarcation are the counties (Nassau and Suffolk), the shores (North and South) and the east end forks (North and South)

Although people outside of Long Island tend to lump us together into one group, the fact of the matter is that many Long Islanders are drawn to the areas where they were raised, and would prefer not to live beyond certain lines of demarcation.  While there is definitely some crossover, people raised in Nassau County usually end up staying there, as do people from Suffolk County.  But perhaps the greatest loyalty is determined by the shorelines and the bodies of water that define an area.

The Long Island Sound is the large body of water on the northern shores of Long Island, spanning from Queens to beyond the north fork at the end of Suffolk County.  Most of the south shore is situated upon bays (Great South Bay being the largest), although some areas to the south border the Atlantic Ocean. Long Islanders typically gravitate towards the body of water that is closest to where they were raised.  And though it might seem strange to people that don't live on Long Island, each area really does have its own personality.

It stands to reason that people living on an island are desirous of having a home on the water, and there are many types waterfront homes on Long Island to choose from.  Though the majority of waterfront homes on Long Island are situated upon a bay or the Long Island Sound, there are also waterfront homes available on harbors, rivers and lakes. Many of the homes near the bays are situated on a navigable canal, which is important to boating enthusiasts that are looking for bulkhead.

Living on Long Island affords homebuyers the opportunity to find the waterfront home that best fits their wants and needs.  Long Island is the perfect place to live if you are an avid boater, or just someone that enjoys the serenity of living on the water.  Below, you will find examples of the different types of waterfront homes that Long Island has to offer, in addition to links to various price ranges.  As you click on the price ranges, you will be directed to a list of towns that currently have waterfront homes on the market.  Each town is a link that can be clicked on to find :  population figures, social indicators, economic indicators, demographic information and school information.

THOM:  Thanks for your comment.  Since you can't pass Long Island on the way to anything, most people come to Long Island for specific reasons if they don't live here, so that's probably why you never made it for a visit.  I'm glad that you learned something from this post, and that you found ZipSkinny helpful.  It is something that I discovered on Active Rain (Debe Maxwell's post), and it is a site that I refer many homebuyers to now.

Adam- I will take the house on the harbour, that view of the boats is gorgeous! Does it ever get warm enough to swim in the water there?

KATERINA:  The harbor view seems to be a popular one.  As far as swimming is concerned, I guess it depends on your tolerance.  By the middle of the summer, the ocean, sound and bays are comfortable, but definitely not warm.  However, I was at the beach this weekend and a number of people were already swimming (even though the water was in the fifties).  I was NOT one of them, but my kids did play in the shallow part a bit.

Adam, In Jersey we're crazy for Cocoa Puffs about our waterfront homes too. Something about being born near the water. We're like amphibians. You nailed it.

ANDREW:  We should consider ourselves lucky that we can just hit the beaches whenever we want.  For some people, the only way to get near water is to go on vacation.  Thanks for your comment, Andew.

Adam, the explanations are fabulous and give an "outsider" such as myself, some idea of why Long Island waterfront Homes in specific areas are what a buyer might want over another area, and your obviously superior knowledge of such is a great boon to any client. Either way, the consumer looking for ANY Long Island Real Estate information should call Adam Waldman, the expert at Long Island relocation, listings, and home sales!

Great job!  I grew up in Manhasset.  I miss the Island.  Out of towners have the wrong idea about this area.  It has so much beauty with its abundance of water, rolling hills and foliage.  Sure, the LIE is a nightmare - take 25A out to the Eastern most points and one will appreciate the beauty of Long Island - Thanks for the memories!
