Lessons From A Turtle

"The race is not to the swift or the strong but to those who endure to the end."

Last week while golfing at Three Lake Public Golf Course, my friends and I enjoyed watching this turtle cross the 13th fairway.  We're assuming he was moving from one lake to another across the course.

He was very determined not to let us impede his progress.  Every time I would get in front of him to take a picture, he would turn and go another direction.  As I would move again, he would change directions again.  We were both, literally, going in circles. I wonder if turtles get dizzy?

I finally ended up taking a picture of him from behind as he moved away and got back on track to wherever he was headed before we came along.   Life is like that sometimes, isn't it?  We get distracted or interrupted in our quests and we get stalled or have to take a detour as roadblocks arise.  Eventually, though, we can get back on track (or find a new direction) and start moving forward again in our intended direction.

I also learned turtles can move faster than you think.  Anytime I got near him (or maybe a her) he would speed up his gait.  Maybe we can take another lesson from that turtle.  When we get interrupted and stalled or sent in circles, we must refocus and move on with renewed enthusiasm.

That turtle looks like one I had as a pet for several years.  Her name was Shelly.  She dug out of my yard, and I haven't seen her since.  I wonder if she made it all the way to Washington!

Hi Brian England ,
So you think he was more shy than determined?

Hi Gloria Todor ,
You're probably right.  LOl  We are a nuisance on the course when they're trying to move about.  I saw a cute baby turtle one day recently and moved it back to the lake.  I didn't want him getting stepped on or squished by a cart.

Hi Myrl,
Gosh... do you think?  If it was several years ago... maybe!

I learned a renewed respect  for the sea turtle.  In Hawaii, some of us have gone to the outter island for a few weeks and signed on to protect the turtle eggs.  I came to realize a sea turtle comes out of the water and with her back flippers make a huge nest in the sand where she lays about 100 eggs.  She slowly and methodically uses her  black flippers to cover the eggs and keep them warm.  She goes back to the water and in about 60 days the eggs will hatch. In unison all the baby sea turtles crawl to the sea.  It is for preservation purposes that they all go back as one unit  - from sea birds, foxes, raccoons, wild dogs, etc......

HI Carol

Well that is a wonderful lesson for us all, and the perfect photo to illustrate the sentiments. Hope your golf game was a success.

Great analogy, Carol. I love seeing turtles doing their thing in the wild (or on the golf course).

Hi Debe Maxwell, CRS ,
Those little creatures have a lot to teach us, don't they?  I did see Debbie's post as well.  It was ironic because when I saw hers I had just scheduled my post for publication a few days later.  Happy Sunday!

Hi Jane Chaulklin-Schott ,
The migration after they hatch must be something.  Thanks for that interesting bit of trivia.

Good afternoon Carol - with regard to turtles I always remember the lesson of the fable The Tortose and the Hare.  I see that example all the time.

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

Couldn't you have asked one of your golfing partners to pick up the turtle and hold it so you could get a better picture? Of course, you can't do that to honu in Hawaii as they are protected, but in Washington, just about anything goes, right?

That was a very insightful observation of turtles and our own behaviors.  Yes they probably do get dizzy too, haha.  Happy 4th of July!
