If your homeowner’s insurance rates keep increasing and you’re not sure why, the culprit might be your children’s toys or lifestyle. For example, trampolines are great fun for kids but thousands of broken bones, spine and skull injuries have been reported following trampoline use. As a result, insurance companies have increased premiums for homeowners with trampolines. Swimming pools also come with lots of problems, including accidents and legal issues involving neighborhood children. Some insurance companies require pool owners to purchase automatic pool covers and/or locks around the pool to prevent some of these accidents and lawsuits. Certain pets can also cause your premiums to skyrocket, such as exotic pets and certain dog breeds. In fact, some dogs are blacklisted and cannot be covered under homeowners insurance. Many people do not agree with this profiling of dogs, and 2 states, Michigan and Pennsylvania, have enacted laws forbidding insurance companies from using the dog blacklist to determine homeowner insurance rates.
