I have often thought about the different title some within the real estate profession have.  For example: Instructor, Teacher and Mentor.  My thought on each as I think they are interpreted are short and listed below:

Instructor:  A monologue given by someone that serves to inspire one to better things.

Teacher:  One who dispenses knowledge in a way that begs for interaction with the class and inspires one to ask questions and search for the answers.  The teacher then corrects where the student is wrong.

Mentor:  A person that knows the ins and outs of the profession.  One that has the ability to dispense the knowledge in a way that begs for interaction with the one being mentored. The mentor inspires one to ask questions and search for the answers.  The mentor then corrects the one being mentored.

Dictionary.com defines:

Instructor-- A person who instructs; teacher

Teacher-A person who instructs, esp. profession; instructor

Mentor-A wise and trusted counselor or instructor, An influential senior sponsor or supporter.

So let me hear from you on your view of these different titles.

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.

I like the word "mentor" because it implies a more constant input. There are things my mentor told me that I wasn't ready to hear at first, but through constant companionship and mentoring, I got it.

Thanks.

Joey,

I love the quote "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear".  Maybe the titles is the preception of the student as far as the titles go or is it in the mind of the teacher?

The terms are pretty close in definition.  Great time for me to reflect, because I often am in a position to teach and insruct others to go above the call of duty.  Thanks for blogging and for the reflection.  Lu

Don,

I consider myself to be an instructor and not a mentor. I think being a mentor includes a passing on of knowledge that takes something away from the mentor ... like teaching a son to take over the family business.

I think your personal definitions more accurately describe these roles. I don't know of many who go out to look for an instructor when they enter a new occupation.

Lu, The terms seem to be very close in definition and sometimes become confusing.  My thought is that it is the person standing in front of the class who determines what their title will be.

Richard,

I like your definition of mentor and it makes the others a little clearer.  Thank you for stopping in and commenting.

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.  Whoa - that is deep!  For some reason all I can think of is the Matrix!  :)

Leesa,

I think the quote is a Buddhist proverb quote.  You're right it is deep but I think that there is some truth in the saying.  Student won't learn when their guard is up, they have to be ready to receive what the teacher has to offer.

I think that you are quite accurate on your definitions - it makes me think of my life in grade school I had teachers - in college I had professors and now in real estate I have a mentor.  It seems to put a lot into prospective.  Thanks - I too like the quote "when the student is ready the teacher will appear"  - Nice job!
