I saw a blog the other day on tankless water heaters and found some information I thought I would share as I do sale new homes in Chesapeake, VA.  I am going to have my builder look at them and see what he thinks.  We could promote them as "green houses" with a few more tweaks.

Here is some info on tankless water heaters.

They cost two to four times more than conventional heaters.  So if you are looking at $500 for a conventional system you may be looking at $1000 to $2000 for a tankless system.

Who's ever heard of them and how do you explain it to a buyer?

They may be 8-14% more efficient then a coventional system.

You may save $50 to $100 a year on your energy bill.

The faucets furthest away from the system may have lower than normal temperatures unless you have a thermostatically controlled system.

They are good for certain purposes, but I would rather use a recirculating system.

Hi Denise!

Actually, my husband and I, my daughter, my best friend and my parents have tankless water heaters...and I can't sing their praises enough! Obviously, not heating water constantly is great for everyone. The small amount of space it takes up is a real space saver (it mounts on a wall). The heater itself runs about $1000, give or take.  The biggest key...be sure to have someone with experience with these do the installation!!!! I can't say this strongly enough! My daughter had a licensed contractor install hers, but he hadn't done it before.  It doesn't heat water going to the bathtub, so obviously he missed something.

My parents and my husband and I have it specifically for our respective bathrooms. My friend has it for her whole house.  If you do this, I will repeat, do it right. Don't get an inexpensive one from your local discount hardware store.

Bottom line...I would never have another conventional water heater.

Denise, thanks for blogging about this, and Paula, thank you for all your experience.  I am going to check into these tankless heaters.

We checked into a tankless system... if only the stores had more in stock as well as sales people who were more well versed... we may have actually bought one but weren't sure if it was the best move.

The brand we bought and love is Rinnai.  I believe it is top of the line and we have absolutely no issues.  I do recommend that you have it installed outside with a housing around it to avoid a little noise when it is running. The beauty is you never run out of hot water, you save on utility bills and you save on space.  It's a win-win!  Go ahead and buy one - then be sure to have it installed by someone who has done them before!

Tankless water heaters are becoming more popular in Mobile, AL. We at J. Craig Homes install both tankless and convential styles and find consumers are 50/50 on the idea. Though many home buyers still stick with the conventional water heaters due to costs, some are also opting for the tankless water heater due to its slim size and not having to be kept indoors.

You can actually find them a lot cheaper than that if you look around, but you have to be using GAS! The electric ones work well, but don't have the heat that most people expect. They are more as a secondary to heat up the water at the other end of the house.

I recently added one to my home and I can tell you one thing. We can now use that large jet bath tub. Before you would run out of water. Now that it is on demand, it is great!

I will never build a home without one.

BTW, a lot of gas companies will give you a deal on one because they want your service...

Denise - The idea of never running out of hot water appeals to me.  If I replace my current water heater I plan to look into a tankless one.

Okay...I have to say, I think your blog might be a tad biased!  I must also state that the tankless heater that I have gets hot water to my tap way faster than my traditional water heater.  I will check out the product you promote, only because I don't understand how it can work on my plastic pipes.

Tankless is definitely the wave of the future.  Gas tankless water heaters are the way to go if your looking for something for the whole house, especially if your going to be using 2-3 hot water applications at a time.  Electrical tankless heaters are better for small home, condos, etc...

Tankless water heaters are expensive and overrated!  They take longer to provide hot water than even a standard hot water tank.  Water and time are wasted down the drain while waiting for this hot water to reach the tap!  A great alternative is a Hot Water Lobster Instant Hot Water Valve!  It's a recirculation system that conserves water while also providing instant hot water throughout your entire home!  It's easy for anyone to install, works off of the homes existing plumbing, and only costs $179.95!

The Hot Water Lobster uses no electricity and is pump free, so it creates no noise.  It is made in the U.S.A., has a 10-year warranty, and can be easily installed in under 10 minutes.

Check it out at:

Denise

I have one in my home and in conjunction with a manifold system it is almost like instant hot water. No probems on that one in 4 years. I do think the manifold system is important. My brother and I have a home building firm also and are now using them.
