In conjunction with the Trinity River Project in Dallas comes a move by the city council's Trinity River committee  to upgrade the image of the area involved by renaming its main thoroughfare from the accurately descriptive Industrial Boulevard to something a bit more reflective or aspirational in nature... and YOU get to vote.

The 6 finalist names are:

•· Eddie Bernice Johnson Parkway

•· César Chávez Boulevard

•· Riverfront Boulevard

•· Trinity Lakes Boulevard

•· Trinityview Boulevard

•· Waterfront Boulevard

Industrial Boulevard by whichever name is chosen will continue to be a main route in the revitalized Trinity River area of Dallas and since the city is hoping to attract developers to create more upscale residential and commercial projects to this sector renaming this street is a great start.

Voting will run today through 5:00 P.M. on Friday.  You may vote for your choice online at www.trinityrivercorridor.org or you can vote by phone at (214)671-9592.

I'm curious... Which one would/did you vote for and why?

Steve  I like Trinity Lakes Boulevard.  This will strengthen the identity of the area.  Neighborhood identity is very important for building pride & ownership within a community.

I voted this morning.  Trinity Lakes is the best one.  I hope the city council gets this right but I'm sure they will mess it up and pick one that doesn't mean anything to Dallas.

Hi Anthony:  I am still on the fence, but leaning heavily toward Trinity Lakes Blvd.  One name that got eliminated in an earlier round of discussion was Stanley Marcus Blvd.  I would have liked that for purely sentimental reasons, but it would have been the wrong part of Dallas to honor him with a street naming.  Mr. Stanley was definitely a downtown guy.

Hi Linda:  I am leaning that way too.  It would be nice if the City Council gets it right, but somehow I bet we end up with Trinityview (a name I hate because of it's forced cobination of 2 words into one non-word) or one of the honoree names.

Anyone else have an opinion???

Steve:  I think either Riverfront Boulevard or Trinity Lakes Boulevard would be great.  I understand wanting to honor Eddie Bernice Johnson and Cesar Chavez, but I'd rather have the two I mentioned.  Just as long as the numbies don't pick George Bush Lane.  Well wait, it this road a "dead end ?"  If so, perhaps GB Lane would make sense... LOL.

Hi Karen Anne:  I kind of like Trinity Lakes.  It just captures the feeling and image beter.  Riverfront sounds too generic and always reminds me of Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati.

As for GB, I will be curious to see when he moves back to Dallas from Washington if there is some move to rename a street by his library at SMU in his honor.

Steve:  As far as the GWB library at SMU... I think the Repugs should not count their hatches before they chicken.  There are several groups still at work trying to put a halt to the library... saying that the immorality of the Bush presidency (regime) would not make his library a "good fit" at SMU... being that the initials stand for Southern Methodist University... which presents itself correctly as a "christian" university.  Immorality and Christianity... should not go hand in hand.  (Boy, I imagine I'm going to hear plenty about this comment.)  Take care...

Karen Anne:  I think you make good points on how things SHOULD play out, but you fail to factor into it all the money and attention that might draw more money to SMU that having the GB library there would bring.  I think that in universities and colleges that are constantly trying to grow endowments, etc. that this kind of cash generating activity is often so hard to turn down that they end up compromising their priciples to avoid losing it.

Did you see that Cesar Chavez was the winner in the voting???? What the heck?  What does he have to do with Dallas and the new Trinity River project.  I would have been happier with Eddie Bernice Johsnon at least she is a political figure in Dallas.  Totally figures.  The Dallas City Council can't get it right!!  Good thing I live in Plano.  :-)
