It has been a while since I have posted anything about Peepers our African Grey parrot. Anyone who has ever owned an African Grey knows all to well they are real "rascals."  Besides having a pretty large vocabulary our Mr. Peepers, is  a great musician, and about half  prankster too. I know he does a lot of what he does for attention, but what is occurring now has got to take the cake!

Now everyone knows parrots mimic. They mimic noise. Peepers mimics everything from our phone conversations to the beep made by the phone when you are dialing a number, to the beeping noise made by the microwave oven when it is finished cooking. And we would challenge anyone to differentiate the difference between the real Beep,  and Mr. Peep's Beep. It simply can't be done by humans. The beeps are identical!

Now here's the deal that I am perplexed over ......

Recently while seismic surveys were being conducted in our area, the blasting would trigger our smoke detectors to go off.  Apparently the house was shaking enough to push particles of dust around in the air.  Now, smoke detectors are set off by particles. (I never knew that until I asked an inspector.)   Anyway when one Alarm is triggered the other 4 alarms in our home fire off in a chain reaction triggering one another with a deafening echo like noise,  that will certainly raise the dead, which is the idea in case of fire.

Well , this went on for a few days . Every time they blasted for the seismic survey the detectors  went off. Now here's the deal.  Twice in the middle of the night recently they went off and there was no blasting going on.   And the batteries are all ok, and the machines are working fine.   Well while watching TV one night I heard a lone alarm signal, it was a little faint so I checked. It was coming from Mr. Peepers himself!  Well it wasn't quite the volume to activate the other 4 alarms but I know how loud he can get if he really wants to. That darn bird. Whenever he is playing the prankster, he gives me a look of "I got Ya" and follows up with a little chuckle.  I am just waiting for this to happen again. Nothing like jumping out of bed at 3:00 AM  to the sound of multiple alarms going off.  I am almost absolutely certain it is that darn parrot.

Trey, that is really funny about Mr. Peep. If he sets all the other alarms off with his false alarm maybe this Thanksgiving you won't have to buy a bird. What a cool pet (sort of!) Makes life interesting though.

Thanks for the chuckle!  Sounds like Mr Peepers keeps you "on your toes!"

That is very funny!

Trey, they are so smart! I don't know much about African Greys but don't they have the mental capability of about a 6 year old person? What a character. Later in the rain~Deb

Mott,

That is a Congo, mine is a Timneh       They are smaller than a congo.

What pirates did with their birds after the bird took out an eye...

Hi Trey... African Greys are incredible mimics!  My friend Danny had one named Winston and what was very funny is they had an intercom system on their house phones.  His mom used to call his dad over the intercom when she needed him for something, soon Winston had learned to call Danny's dad mimicking his mom's voice perfectly.  It was hysterical to be over at their house when Winston would call out "David" and a few moments later you would see Danny's dad go trodding down the hall looking for Danny's mom.  :)

I understand fully well.  Frequently I don't know if it is the bird or my wife calling. :0)

Thanks Andy,  You know I married " Elle May Clampitt" so between 3 dogs, 4 cats and 2 birds there is never a dull moment at the Thurmond's house. Always an "opening" for a pet position according to her.

It's amazing how our pets beome so much of our lives. You mentioned blogging often about Peepers in the past. I think this is a good thing. It shows your true character...that you can love and nurture an animal.

Is it Mr. Peppers? Or should it be Dr. Pepper?  This sounds like a hot chilly pepper!

Trey

That's is so neat that Mr. Peeps makes those sounds, however if one of my pets woke me up at 3:00 am I would put a muzzle around his mouth. Thanks for the laugh!

Trey- Sounds like Mr. Peepers got you good!  It really is incredible how accurately they can reproduce sound.  Your seems to have a keen sense of humor now all you have to do is teach him how to wink ;-)

I had a beagle once who would "wind up" with the firehorn it was hillarious. Her "singing" was a bit rusty...our beloved Dusty.

Patrice,

Mr. Peepers has his own pet too...one of our cats, Mac,   and he and Peepers are best buddies.

He calls him by name all day long and he perks  up with a gleam in his eye whenever Mac comes around.
