Walking in the Shoes of our Clients

Listing and buying a home for ourselves can complicate our lives for sure!    Trying to get our own stuff done and keeping our business thriving can be a challenge.

I think the best lesson I have learned, is what we put our clients through each time we list a home.    From telling them all their STUFF has to be put away, making daily duties difficult.   Where did we put that????  That is a common question.   I know my jewelry is in the car, and every time I get dressed I have to remember to go to the car!

My master bedroom is a dark dungeon, which I have to have to sleep every time, (and still don't....), but now need to remember to open every single blind in the home.    There are usually things I leave out, but now need to put away each and every day ..... just in case there is a showing.   I have always had my coffee pot in the hall bathroom, which is behind my loft (office) so I don't drip coffee up the stairs.   Back to dripping......coffee pot back in the kitchen.    I prefer now to eat out, so my kitchen stays clean!

The other day I got a text at 7 pm for a showing .....  at 7 pm!   REALLY....  It is an occupied property, can you do a little planning?    It was a preview, so called the agent.  She lives in the neighborhood and wanted to see the home.   OH, BTW, hasn't sold a home in a year...oh brother!   I had just made dinner (don't do that much) and had 3 pans and lots of dishes in the kitchen, needed to push back the preview 30 minutes.  She canceled.

I have not moved for 17+ years, and sure forget all this from years ago.    I will definitely know what stress I put on my Sellers each and every time I list a home from now on.  Guess I forgot!!!!   I think we should all move every so many years, so we remember what our clients go through!

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

It is very difficult for us to take our own advice. When I get around to moving again, I will call over another agent who isnt' quite so eager to appease me for tips. I know without a doubt I will miss something. I think we tend to get that attitude of we know it all and been through it a million times, but this does NOT apply to our own situations.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents  Am in that debate with myself now -- getting ready to sell a rental (already painted and cleaned) I have had for years and wondering if someone else's fresh eyes would be a good thing before putting up the sign. Might have missed something important! All the best - Lynn

Elizabeth, I did exactly that.   When dealing with our own property, it is difficult to separate the personal and business.

Lynn B. Friedman the market always slows this time of year, and no different this year, so two weeks....no offers.   Good feedback, thank you!

Hi Joan,  selling a home and keeping it in show ready condition has got to be one of the hardest to do - usually our homes are the sanctuary from all the crazy.....but then when they become a commodity it's an entirely different story!

Wishing you a great offer soon. I know it's awful to go through, but as you mention, a good reminder of what our clients are dealing with.  Where are going next - smaller? New area of Denver?

There is one agent in my market that must just hang around the office all day until she sees a new listing pop on--then makes an appt to preview it within the hour!  It's the on demand generation...

Joan, thanks for sharing from your personal view of selling a home.

You, do get a better perspective from the seller point of view.

I also saw how this is a good illustration to use with those who try to sell by FSBO. Having an agent control the traffic can make life so much easier.

Best wishes on the soon to come sale of your home.

Mary Hutchison, SRES, ABR that is so rude!   The agent that did that to me is older, just being nosy IMO.

Buying and selling our own home certainly helps us to better understand what our clients are going through. And I suspect while we are good at giving advice we may not be quite as good following it in our own situations.

Good luck!

It's a good eye opener to have your own home for sale. Sellers are truly inconvienenced on a regular basis. I have my daughter's home for sale in a community outside of my geographic work area. I've been appalled many times at the unprofessionalism and inconsiderate behavior of the agents in that area. Most recently, on the day my daughter was moving out of her house, which is not yet sold, an agent called asking to show it in 3 hours. The moving van had just left; I'm there helping my pregnant daughter and son-in-law clean and pack up all the things that could not go on the truck when I get the call. I'm literally on the phone with the carpet steam cleaner in my hand, half way through the cleaning of the living room carpet as I explain why the showing can not happen that day. The agent became rude and obnoxious and actually hung up on me mid sentence. Really? AND because she has a virtual job working from home and a large dog that needs removed from the property, the showing instructions in MLS were for 24 hr notice to show and yet this agent still thought we should stop everything and accomodate his request to show in 3 hrs. Take a long walk off a short pier!

Jeff, I did have a few friends come in and give ideas, as it was more difficult with my own home.

Jamie King OH MY, and you are right, agents can be so rude, and have no idea of what Sellers are going through.  Good luck with her home, and hope you have it UC soon.
