Growing up during in the Viet Nam era was a dificult time in our history but a "Great" lyric and song was born which made us proud to be Americans and very proud of those brave soldiers who fought to make "FREEDOM RING"!

Ballad Of The Green Beret -

Barry Sadler and Robin Moore

Fighting soldiers from the sky

Fearless men who jump and die

Men who mean just what they say

The brave men of the Green Beret

CHORUS:

Silver wings upon their chest

These are men, America's best

One hundred men will test today

But only three win the Green Beret

Trained to live off nature's land

Trained in combat, hand-to-hand

Men who fight by night and day

Courage peak from the Green Berets

CHORUS:

Back at home a young wife waits

Her Green Beret has met his fate

He has died for those oppressed

Leaving her his last request

Put silver wings on my son's chest

Make him one of America's best

He'll be a man they'll test one day

Have him win the Green Beret.

I never heard that song, or maybe I did but I don't know the lyrics.  Seems like a nice song.  I will research it.

Touching!  As a veteran I am so supportive of our troops and proud of those who have given the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom.  I currently have 2 nephews who have signed up to join the military.  I pray that they will live to tell their children the stories of war & peace but I also pray that they will cause the enemy to die for their country instead of them dying for ours.

Jerome,

Love the song and remember when it came out.  I had just returned from Korat AB, Thailand during the Vietnam war.  The song is just as true today as it was back in the day.  Thank you  for your post.

Vow! It is indeed very touching. I liked this post very much. I can feel the way you must be feeling right now as my brother is in the army. Really, some memories leave a deep feeling in the heart.
