Flex Alert in California August 24 and 25, 2018
If you live here in California you are no doubt aware we are having some pretty warm weather...triple digits in many areas.
And a FLEX ALERT is in place for California for tomorrow (August 25) as it was for today, from 5 until 9 pm in order to help save energy and prevent more serious problems including emergency energy saving measures and rotating power outages.
And given the weather perhaps it will even get extended beyond tomorrow.
We’ve had these before so it shouldn’t be any surprise, but it’s important to be aware of the ways we can all help to save energy and avoid more serious problems with the statewide power grid.
So to help, here are some tips on how to save energy - you may already know this, and may hopefully are being mindful of your energy use, energy-saving tips are always a good thing to know about, right?
Set thermostats at 78 degrees or higher (or just turn that AC off for a few hours depending on how hot it is in your area)
Use fans and draw drapes to keep out the sun
Turn off unnecessary lights and appliances – while it may not be a big amount per household, think of millions doing this!
Use major appliances in the morning or late evening (before or after 5 - 9 PM) - grill outside for example, avoid the dishwasher and doing your clothes washing, and try to not use your stove.
Keep windows and doors closed to keep the interior a little cooler...unless you have a great breeze
Here are some more energy-saving tips to help!!
It’s also important to check on anyone you know who may be elderly or disabled, and perhaps those with young children.
If needed find out where the cool zones are in your community - often the library is, among other places where people can go for relief. Cool zones are typically set up to assist seniors and those with disabilities.
Here's a list of cool zones for San Diego County.
We helped as we could today – minimal lights, no major appliances, and I grilled our entire dinner outside – and thankfully the ocean breezes have cooled things down here close to the coast. No doubt inland it’s still pretty hot! We'll see what tomorrow brings as there are plenty of areas in the triple digits - only mid 80s here by the beach!!
