Flex Alert in California August 24 and 25, 2018

Flex AlertIf you live here in California you are no doubt aware we are having some pretty warm weather...triple digits in many areas.

And a FLEX ALERT is in place for California for tomorrow (August 25) as it was for today, from 5 until 9 pm in order to help save energy and prevent more serious problems including emergency energy saving measures and rotating power outages.

And given the weather perhaps it will even get extended beyond tomorrow.

We’ve had these before so it shouldn’t be any surprise, but it’s important to be aware of the ways we can all help to save energy and avoid more serious problems with the statewide power grid.

So to help, here are some tips on how to save energy - you may already know this, and may hopefully are being mindful of your energy use, energy-saving tips are always a good thing to know about, right?

Set thermostats at 78 degrees or higher (or just turn that AC off for a few hours depending on how hot it is in your area)

Use fans and draw drapes to keep out the sun

Turn off unnecessary lights and appliances – while it may not be a big amount per household, think of millions doing this!

Use major appliances in the morning or late evening (before or after 5 - 9 PM) - grill outside for example, avoid the dishwasher and doing your clothes washing, and try to not use your stove.

Keep windows and doors closed to keep the interior a little cooler...unless you have a great breeze

Here are some more energy-saving tips to help!!

It’s also important to check on anyone you know who may be elderly or disabled, and perhaps those with young children.

If needed find out where the cool zones are in your community - often the library is, among other places where people can go for relief. Cool zones are typically set up to assist seniors and those with disabilities.

Here's a list of cool zones for San Diego County.

We helped as we could today – minimal lights, no major appliances, and I grilled our entire dinner outside – and thankfully the ocean breezes have cooled things down here close to the coast. No doubt inland it’s still pretty hot! We'll see what tomorrow brings as there are plenty of areas in the triple digits - only mid 80s here by the beach!!

That doesn’t sound like much fun but I can see why it is important to abide by the rule Jeff..

Hi Jeff... what a great PSA! I'd never heard that expression "flex alert" before reading your post. Seem to learn something new every day here in the rain.

Good morning Jeff. So many people, so much electricity, so little supply! Good luck, no "flex alert" here. A new term for me! Enjoy your day and stay cool!

Triple digit temperatures is something that I am very acclimated with, haha.  I hope that people are careful out in the heat, especially if they are not used to it.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®,CRS,

It's really not that big of a deal, and if everyone helps we can avoid power outages, which are certainly more troublesome.

It's really pretty bearable James Dray at least in our areas. Not nearly so hot here as it is further inland. But lots of the country has been dealing with heat, too, and worse!

Jeff it has been on the hot side here as well, but nothing like you guys are getting hit with on the left coast.

Jeff,

No flex alerts here.  We do pull the drapes on a very hot day!  Happily as the sun goes down, it does cool off here at night, so one can sleep.  Stay cool.  A

Thanks for the kind words. We have them every summer, at least once, and often know a day ahead. Better than having brown-outs and power outages.

Ah, yes Barbara Todaro  I do remember...especially the humidity in the summer, which is usually much less here.

Maybe (hopefully) it will be cooler for you in August  Dorie Dillard  but July temps do not bode well. And then all the fires, too!!

Hi Wayne Martin

Well it's not been bad where I am...mid 80s with some humidity...but so much hotter inland. I heard it hit 118 in the California desert cities.

Ha ha Brian England and I have experienced them in your area, too. I was in Scottsdale for a business meeting a few years ago in August and it was 117!! And still 90+ at 9 that night!

Yes, the ocean breezes help quite a bit.

The Flex Alert was for all of California through today. I think temps up north and inland are far worse than where I am...mid 80s here which is not too bad but with humidity.

Hi George Souto

Well it's not bad here by the ocean, thankfully. Seems like you had a pretty good heat wave not that long ago.

We don't call it Flex Alert in Sacramento, but we do have ungodly HOT weather that requires customer notices to please not use heavy duty appliances like washers and dryers during peak hours from 5 to 9 PM. Fortunately, we get Delta breezes every now and then that cool us down around 6 PM.

I just asked Siri, it's 104 right now. And it's only 3:35 PM.
