Artificial Intelligence: Observations and Concerns of a Beverly Hills...

AI (Artificial Intelligence) and my concerns: observations of a Beverly Hills Realtor Endre Barath, Jr.

We all know what AI is nowadays, I remember the days when Bobby Fisher played chess against the IBM computer and I was cheering for Bobby Fisher and the rest is history.

We all have heard or even used/or use ALEXA and/or SIRI, just ask her anything and she will give you an answer. There are self-driving cars, self-driving trucks. There are more and more computer-controlled Airplanes, Satellites and might as well call them AI controlled.

I remember going to the grocery store, getting to know the regular cashiers, knowing their names and family members and I even ended up listing their condominiums or their parent’s homes.

Today, if you go to the grocery stores for that matter might as well go to any store and there are more and more checkout lines that are self serve check outs, just like the gas stations. The machines are taking over your job and your life.

Have you heard of: TAILOR is an App that automatically stiches your conversations, websites, email and a lot more? As an example, take a few overlapping screenshots and Tailor will automatically detect them and create one long and seamless image.

Have you heard of: Exhibit, it takes data, then plots the locations on Google Map, in turn it becomes an interactive timeline and displays images and links in a tabular viewer form there are Interactive Spreadsheets. All this can be done with a single HTMLS file and a spreadsheet.

Have you heard of Face Swapping Software:  Not long ago this was used for swapping actors and actresses faces into situations they did not want to participate, such as physically too risky stunts, then it evolved into pornographic videos, same idea replacing the faces with other bodies…. Now we can replace ex-presidents, political figures and the list goes on and on. Who will know what is real and what is make-believe?

Just to be clear, I am not just some Crazy Realtor in Beverly Hills who has reservations and concerns about Artificial Intelligence not necessarily being good for the long run. In other words, mankind might be in danger. Robots, Super Computers, Technology has no feelings or emotions, so it they program things in such a way that what they perceive as being good, could wipe out the human factor. There have been books written about this. Why are these authors concerned? There are legitimate reasons, if you read Dan Brown’s latest book ORIGIN you just might reconsider if you are not a believer.

Call me Paranoid, I will take that as a compliment, as far as I am concerned Paranoia is the highest state of awareness. There are some high-powered individuals that are concerned just as I am Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, Bill Gates! Hence, I consider myself in good company.

Don’t take my word for it, Google what the above individuals have to say and why they are concerned. I am concerned about the future impact on the Human Race, not just about elimination of jobs. I will use several examples, people always say we will control the machines, they will not control us. Just look around you:

  1.        Drive on the road and look at other drivers left and right of you and in front of you. They are on their smart phones, checking emails, texting or just reading things on their smart phones. It is unsafe, it is dangerous, and it is illegal. Never the less it does not stop them. They are addicted and or under the influence of AI.
  2.        Go to a meeting watch how many people are checking their phones…
  3.        If you are out having dinner at a Restaurant, look at how many people have their heads in their phone?

Anyway, you get my point. We have already lost a massive part of the human contact, thanks to the technology that was going to help our lives. There is this misconception that machines can not control humans. Really? Humans control wild life such as dogs and lions and the list goes on and on. How can we as humans do it? We are not stronger, rather we are smarter…. So, with that said if Artificial Intelligent is smarter that us it is just a question of time when we give up our position as being the smarts on the planed and with that we end up giving up control and the machines take over.

I am all about technology helping us but let’s make sure we are in control…

Hi Endre,

Excellent post. I have to agree with you this world is far to dependent on AI. I refuse to use self serve cashiers. If we let automation take over there won't be enough jobs for growing up in this changing world.

Marte Cliff  never lived in a place like you and I loved the description, on the other hand we have managed to find the same concept... in Century City in the heart of Los Angeles, Diane has a similar relationship with the Bank people... I have the same relationship when I go to the Westchester Trader Joe's as well as the cashiers at Ralph's.... we create by hook or crook a human connection in spite of all the AI that surrounds us, Endre

This is a scary blog!  What will AI look like in 20 years??  Phones are addictive, I feel for the kids growing up with a screen constantly in their face.  I see many adults addicted as well.  It takes a very conscious effort to put the phone down and not answer it right away
