Can You Make the Time to Do It?

Someone I know is always telling us that they didn’t have the time to do what it is they said they would do. It was a simple thing. In fact, it didn’t time mattersrequire much in the way of time and effort.

We all have people that we meet in our lives...business and personal...who are forever telling you that they didn’t have the time to do something.

In the past, I thought OK, they didn’t have the time. And sometimes that’s true.

However, there are some people who grab for this excuse constantly.

Heck, most of us use it. (Seriously, who are you kidding, you know you have!!!)

But what that says is that whatever it is you didn’t have the time to do, you really didn’t want to make the time to do it.  In your hierarchy of things on your TO DO list, that particular thing was not in the top 5. And, there’s nothing wrong with that.

What matters to you most may not to someone else.

When you recognize this, it might help you say “no” to the things that you really don’t want to do, or at least set a more realistic timeframe in getting them done.

We also learn to make time for what matters most to us, whether it’s our family, work, our hobbies, making money. We’re more likely to get those things done when they’re important to us.

What about the things that need to get done but aren’t in your hierarchy? Well, that’s up to you!

You are the one who decides what matters most to you and are willing to handle the consequences of not doing them.

Ha, just finished talking with my sister about this dilemma last night. She says her daughter, my niece, cannot find a new job because when she comes home from work, it's TV time. Therefore, not enough time to find a new job.

Hi Kathy,
Sometimes we need to find the time for what is important to others... the ones who we care about.  It's not always about US, is it?

Kathy,

I think this has become has become the common excuse for the masses.  It is a nicer way to say NO.

My husband and I were just discussing the multitude of tasks that need to get done in our household that neither of us want to do.  Yet, they need to get done.  So we divided the list and now to the conquering phase.  If we can knock some of this stuff out this week, it will be good.

Liz and Bill Spear with your dual career, the only way you could have survived for so long was because you know how to do what needs to be done and what you've committed to do!

Sharon Lee I agree!!!  We're all human in that way.

Barbara Todaro that's the way I see it. We make sure that we have the time to do what we want.

Hi Sham Reddy Thank you and I always appreciate your stopping by.

Wow Donald Urschalitz you were taught right!

Dorie Dillard if we learn to say no or later to the things we know we really don't want to do, we'd be better off.

Wayne Martin I used to get the "didn't have the time" excuse when I managed an office.

Gabe Sanders most of us honor those commitments...it's how we were taught.

Joe Pryor I sometimes think that people who do that don't know how to prioritize.

Hi Gita Bantwal Thank you!  Appreciate it.

Brian England I know that when I tell myself that I didn't have time for it... I'm really saying that I just didn't want to find the time to do it.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD there are times when I set a mental timer for a task that I don't want to do but that needs to be done. At the end of that time, I can move on to another project.

Will Hamm I'll bet they'll remember that too!!!

You've got that right Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty I've learned as I get older that I don't have to like everyone I meet and I don't have to do things I truly don't want to do.

George Souto very good point. The time wasting is a way of putting off those tasks we really don't want to do.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents that is exactly what I'm talking about. I've had conversations about that with my two nieces.  They'll find the time to do something if they want to.

You've got that right Carol Williams And we see too much of the All About Me in the world sometimes.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel that's a very good point. It's rare to find someone who will tell you the truth...that they don't want to!

Chris Ann Cleland that's a smart idea. I'm a big list maker because I get a lot of satisfaction from crossing something off of it.

Roy Kelley You are so right. I've been setting aside the time to do more reading...something I love doing.

Michael Jacobs I used to get this from my oldest niece..."I need to.....".  I told her to quit saying that and just do it.

Hi Kathy Streib, as long as there's a will, there will be a way but some use the "no time" phrase as an excuse, I guess it's easier than saying no.
