war councilThe Hale-Byrnes House in Stanton announces 2 events in August:

Saturday, August 11 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. the American Revolution Round Table of Northern Delaware is sponsoring a talk by Glenn Williams on "Lord Dunmore's War:The Last Conflict of America's Colonial Era."

Sunday, August 12 from 3-5 p.m. Mike Dixon will speak on "Route 9"

Fee is $5 which includes coffee and dessert.


First Saturday in the First State activities in Dover begin statehouseat 9 a.m. with tours of Legislative Hall, the Old State House (photo), and the Johnson Victrola Museum. There will also be free tours of the Governor's House from 10-1 p.m.  at 10:30 a.m Dr. Stephanie Holyfield will speak at the Delaware Public Archives on the impact of smallpox during America's War for Independence with information about the history of the disease and Washington's decision to inoculate and epidemic threats.

 

 

bootleggerThe New Castle Historical Society announces their August 18 event, "Bootleggers Bash" from 7-10 p.m. at The Arsenal on the Green in New Castle. Enter a 1920's speakeasy through a hidden doorway into a Prohibition-eral world, complete with live music by the Blackbird Society Orchestra. Details and reservations here.

 

Foodie FridayFoodie Friday at the Blue Ball Barn. A night of live music, 3 food trucks in a competition featuring the Blue Cat Blues Band on Friday, August 17 from 5-8 p.m. Kid and pet friendly event, co-hosted by Delaware Greenways, Friends of Wilmington Parks, Alapocas Run State Parks and Wildwich Food truck $5 per person, children under 16 free.

 

On Monday, August 20, 7 p.m. at Stoney's Pub on Concord Pike in Wilmington, the Summer Preservation series will host a program about mirrored follythe first outdoor exhibition presented by the Winterthur Garden. "Architectural Whimsy in the Garden". It features 6 historic follies and 7 additional follies constructed for the exhibition. Meet Carol Long, Curator of the garden as she gives an overview of the exhibition and Rob McKeown of Elk Creek Cabinetry, who created two of the new follies and repaired two of the historic follies placed in the garden by H. PENNSYLVANIA EVENTS

Brandywine battleBrandywine Battlefield’s annual Summer History Camp runs from June – August.  Campers  learn about life in the 18th century and Washington’s Continental Army through various activites.  Camp activities include 18th Century Cooking, Team Artillery (water balloon launcher), 18th Century Medicine, and Capture the Flag!   Camp cost is $250 per camper.   Camp is for  grades K – 6.

 

 

Saturday, August 4 at 1 p.m. in celebration of their 80th birthday,Nutt  Hopewell Furnace in Elverson will host the leading expert on colonial iron making.  Daniel A. Graham will present an overview of the iron making that fueled the American Revolution and discuss his new book Samuel Nutt and the French Creek Iron-Works, which has just been released by the Friends of Hopewell Furnace.

  

 

 Town Tours and Village Walks for August: August 2, "The Phoenix Column: A Bridge to the Future"   Walk the grounds of one Locktender's houseof Chester County's most important industrial companies, the Phoenix Iron Company. 5:30-7 p.m. Meet at 2 N. Main St., Phoenixville. August 9, Agricultural Antiques & Modern Machines presented by the Upper Oxford Twp. Historical Commission. Meets at Maple Lawn Farm, 380 Forest Manor Rd., Cochranville. 5:30-7 p.m. August 16, Fricks Lock:Birth of a Canal Village (photo:Locktender's House) presented by the East Coventry Historical Commission. Drive to Fricks Lock Rd. from Rt. 724 in E. Coventry and follow signs (GPS Fricks Lock Rd., Pottstown). August 23 Supper at Chester Springs, sold out. August 30, The Evolution of Power and Fabric Production at Bondsville. Presented by E. Brandywine Twp., 1214 Horseshoe Pike, Downingtown. All free events sponsored by Chester County Board of Commissioners, Chester County Conference & Visitors Bureau, Chester County Historic Preservation Network Chester County Historical Society, and County Planning Commission. SugartownAugust 30 from 5-8 p.m.  Historic Sugartown in Malvern will hold a pop-up Biergarten presented by Locust Lane Craft Brewery and Chaddsford Winery. It is free to enter the village with food and beverages available for purchase.
