Horse Farm in Stratham NH

AT HOME IN STRATHAM NEW HAMPSHIRE
- Stratham is a small town, covering about 15 square miles, next door to Exeter and Hampton, and is just about 10 minutes from Portsmouth.   The current population of Stratham is about 7,000 residents.  Stratham was settled in 1631, and became it's own incorporated town in 1716.  At that time, it was the 6th town in New Hampshire to be incorporated.

Stratham is home to rural working farms, new and newer home subdivisions and condominium  complexes, some smaller shopping centers, and wonderful peaceful country scenery.  The townspeople have done a very nice job of balancing quiet residential neighborhoods and commercial development.  Right alongside all of that are bucolic rolling farmlands.

Stratham Memorial SchoolStratham is home to Stratham Memorial School, which covers pre-school through 5th grade.  Students in 6th through 8th grade attend Exeter Regional Cooperative Middle School, and high school students attend Exeter Region Cooperative High School, located in Exeter NH.

An inclusion model of teaching is used in Stratham schools. All students are actively engaged in classroom activities. Challenged students work with typical students in the  classroom using a variety of methods and techniques to solve problems and learn from one another.  And in addition to being inclusive, teachers and staff use adaptive technologies to give all students equal opportunities for learning.

Stratham Memorial School has been a Blue Ribbon school for the past 5 years, and this is based upon NHPIE (New Hampshire Partners in Education). Parents are an integral part of the school community. Parent volunteers are often seen helping out in classrooms throughout the school.  Activities before & after school are also NH Community Technical Collegeconducted by parents and teachers as part of a variety of their enrichment programs.

New Hampshire Community Technical Collegemakes its home in Stratham, and is part of the statewide post-secondary educational opportunities in NH.  NHCT partners with the surrounding communities to offer educational opportunities and customized training services.

Stratham has a strong Youth Activity Program- great sports activities for kids of all ages.  The Stratham Recreation Commission all kinds sporting activities that include: girls and boys basketball, baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.  They also sponsor a summer soccer camp and a summer day camp.Great Bay Discovery Science Center

Stratham is one of the few communities in the Seacoast area that provides a landing for access for boaters to Great Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean beyond that.  Right on the shore of Great Bay you'll find The Great Bay Sandy Point Discovery Center.  This center is a great educational experience, an opportunity  to explore in a close-up manner, all the life of the ecosystem of the Great Bay area.  This Discovery Center serves as home for the Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Very nice post Ann. Stratham is a very nice town...and a great location. Do you and Bear go to the Stratham Fair at all? I've only been once years ago but remember it fondly.

I loved that you included the "inclusion model of teaching" used in Stratham schools - my mother in law was a special aid teacher (she's retired now) - and worked with the inclusion model.  Very impressive post Ann.

Monika - Yes, I've been to the Stratham Fair many times - loved it each time, but it has been awhile since I've been.  I LOVE fair food!  ;-)    It is such a pretty town - lots of rolling farmland, old apple orchards, etc., all mixed in with residential areas and some commercial business areas.

TLW - WOW!  Thanks for that great comment!!  I have been soaking up tips all this time, and maybe they're paying off!  ;-)      I have to admit I have no idea how/where I rank on Google.  I know I get really good leads from my websites & internet exposure, but I just don't know where I rank.

Mariana - Thank YOU for those great comments!  I love the wide variety of houses everywhere in this area - there are some absolutely gorgeous antique homes in every town in this area, as well as lovely new construction homes and everything in between.

Ines - Thank you for your feedback!  Stratham is a fabulous town in regards to their philosophy about their schools and how child-oriented they are with all kinds of activities.

Thank you Ladies for reading and for your great comments - I very much appreciate them!

Hi, Ann!!  I read this post last night before I went to bed and I told myself, I have got to go back tomorrow and ask her to join the Localism Brainstorming group -- and before I had a chance you found it and joined on your own!  I KNEW you would be perfect for the group!  ;o)  This is the kind of detailed local information I wish I was writing.  Thanks so much for sharing!

Hi Sue - your comment made me laugh!  You must have moved here before I did, either that or I just have forgotten that the Agway wasn't always there while I've lived here....which is entirely possible!  ;-)

And thank you VERY much for that wonderful comment!

Hi Ann: Makes me a little homesick for the Northeast. I miss those New England winters, although I'm a little wimpy about the cold:-) Nice, informative piece that really gives you a sense of the community and a great template for anyone building posts about their local area.

Irene - thank you so much for reading and for your nice comments.

I'll tell you, today and only today, you wouldn't be a little homesick for the winter.  I enjoy our winters, but today is the coldest day of our winter this year.  It's about 8 degrees, with wind chills taking it to minus 20.  COLD!!!!!  Oh well, we just bundle up and go about daily living.  The sun is shining beautifully and we have our gorgeous blue sky, and all is well.  By this weekend, we're to get back to 40's and 50's again.  That's what we'd been having until a day or 2 ago.

Thanks again,
Ann

That is really, really cold Ann. -20 degrees: You're right, I don't miss that. I do miss the architecture and the historical sense of place. Seattle is so much newer than Portsmouth and while we have some turn of the century homes, we don't have the pretty old farms and spaces you've got there.

Hi Irene - this cold shall pass, fortunately!

Like you, I love the architecture here, and the wide array of home styles.  It's just so, well, New England!  As you know, we have homes here dating back to the 1600's & 1700's, that are still lived in and have been beautifully restored.  When I go and visit family down in Florida, the housing is so different, and much of it looks the same.  Not true here, that's for sure!

Ann, you are setting a very high bar for us here! A very detailed and informative post.

I love New England (fun to see the beautiful old homes), but confess I prefer it in the warmer months.
