Google Secrets of SEO! Does Google Tell All?
This causes Internet Marketers to try to guess what gets you to the top of Google and creates a huge business sector of those who claim they have discovered what makes Google tick and sell these 'discovered secrets'.
The obvious reason that Google has kept all the ranking algorythms secretive is not to make our lives tough or to make it hard for us to get to the top of Google but rather to keep their secrets out of the hands of their competitors. If they became too transparent the competition would steal or copy their secrets. It is like guarding a secret family recipe. The other reason they don't want to let the cat out of the bag is because the cheaters would find another way to scam the system. We know there is a lot of abuse of systems just here on Active Rain, can you just imagine on the whole internet worldwide how rampant this abuse is?
But Udi Manber, the vice president of Engineering in Search Quality at Google just made this statement;
" But being completely secretive isn’t ideal, and this blog post is part of a renewed effort to open up a bit more than we have in the past. We will try to periodically tell you about new things, explain old things, give advice, spread news, and engage in conversations. Let me start with some general pieces of information about our group."
Google's job is to decide within a fraction of a second which of billions of sites and in what order to present these sites to the searcher who is among many others that are placing requests for information millions of times per day. That is one heavy duty short order!
Udi goes on to say that the most famous part of the ranking algorithm is PageRank which was developed by the founders of Google, Larry Page and Sergey Brin. " PageRank is still in use today, but it is now a part of a much larger system. Other parts include language models (the ability to handle phrases, synonyms, diacritics, spelling mistakes, and so on), query models (it's not just the language, it's how people use it today), time models (some queries are best answered with a 30-minutes old page, and some are better answered with a page that stood the test of time), and personalized models (not all people want the same thing)." If you want to learn more about PageRank read my post here.
The only goal of Google is to improve the user experience and this must be accomplished for all the languages. For the last two years Google has been working on all the languages not just the main ones to of course improve the user experience. Did you know that there are 8 million people who speak a language called, Azerbaijani? There is always something new to learn! Along those lines, Google is always working with large teams to also make the experience better through new interfaces and applications such as Google Notebook. They even travel around the world and go into people's homes to watch and observe how we use our computers and how we do our searches, etc. I find this amazingly interesting!
They have another whole team that just works on Abuse and Spam! Hmmm, that is a no brainer! This is an area that continues to pose a problem and therefore needs to be overseen and constantly combated. To find out more about how people can steal your website and get you thrown into the Google sandbox read my post here.
Udi ends his post with; "Just as Moore's law governs the doubling of computing speed every 18 months, there is a hidden unwritten law that doubles the complexity of our most difficult queries in a short time. This is impossible to measure precisely, but we all feel it. We know we cannot rest on our laurels, we have to work hard to meet the challenge. As I mentioned earlier, we will continue providing you with updates on search quality in the coming months, so stay tuned."
