St George, UT, Home Inspector: Had a strange call today

By
Home Inspector with HouseNspect

Just had a strange call from "another" inspector in my area . . . but what kind of inspector I'm just not sure . . . he's asking what would I charge to go along with him on an inspection because he can't get in crawlspaces or the attic but he still wants to do the inspection (he's also hard of hearing) . . . he said he has all the computers and stuff, he's retired, asked me if I'm busy and a few more questions, some not making a whole lot of sense . . . really had a hard time understanding him, but told him if he needed help I'm available at an hourly rate paid in advance, just really didn't know how to respond . . . didn't seem fazed at all and said he'd get back with me . . . time will tell I guess.

Anyone else have strange calls/questions asked similar to this? (I know I've received inquires from other inspectors in the area just by the way they ask questions, but this one was rather different).

Hello Mike,

I find it difficult to think that I would do ride-a-longs for anyone in my chosen area let alone with someone who has so many strikes against him. It may not be the right thing to do but I would recommend that he seek different employment. Might even suggest some type of teaching, IF he really is experienced. That really sounds different to me. I have had inquiries but nothing like that. He surely would not pay to ride along if he is already experienced. It just does not make sense to me. I wish I could be more help. Hang in there, you may not even get a callback.

Blessings

Michael: Thanks for your response, as I've thought about the whole conversation for the past few hours, it just doesn't make any sense to me either. Appreciate your comments and will now mix them in with all my thoughts and await to hear from him . . . if I every do.

I get a few calls a month from local graduates of the Hondras college, where they churn out home inspectors about a dozen a month. They usually ask if I need anyone else, and when I say no, they will ask to ride along on one of my home inspections to see how it's done. I let one ride along once, and it was a mistake I won't make again.

Helo Kevin,

As our reports are the property of the client, I see taking someone on a ride along to be a conflict UNLESS we contact the client and ask permission to do so. TOO much trouble and a certain distraction from our typical process of inspection. I think you have already figured that out.

Blessings
