I've written a bunch about the emotional aspects of the home buying experience.
In a series of posts on Sex And Real Estate, I reviewed the excellent book by Marjorie Garber by the same name. The emotional triggers that cause us to fall in love with a home often overwhelm the "information" that is presented about. There's no denying it. I have personally rationalized away the fact that the home I was about to buy didn't have enough bedrooms because it just "felt like home." I was in love with it.
I couldn't resist posting this hilarious video. It illustrates just how strong these triggers can be. It wouldn't be so funny if it weren't so true. :)
The video hits it spot on, love it when the wife gets annoyed with the husband about asking too many questions that needs to be asked but the wife is so in love with the house, she doesn't see the problems. Classic
Whatta hoot!
I was totally impressed with the agent. Her truthfulness and positive attitude was definitely working in her favor. I am sure the wife went home that night and convinced the husband to buy the place!
It's kinda like "Oh, the water in the basement? No big deal. It only happens when it rains." I loved the video. The woman seemed to be OK with the unsepakable evil. Hmmmmm. (just kidding!)
I got a kick out of that. The funny thing is that we have a logical guy that has issues with the scary clown and the evil... and the wife is ready to look at the closets.
Even with out the thing in the cellar is their an extra cost for supernatural beings? What a little mold be glad you don't have dead bodies in the lower level. How fussy can a buyer be?
This is a classic and so true. Of course The Thing is exagerated reality, but people do this all the time. Thankfully they wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat and figure it out...
Thanks Jeff! The lighter or darker side of real estate! Dead clown in the basement unfortunately reminds me of Gacy in my area. LOL, Agent was really a good salesperson.
Great video Jeff...I wanted more though. I think I am a clown-a-phobe....have you seen that commercial with the baby making online trades with the clown in the back..."underestimated the creepiness of it all"...that commercial cracks me up everythime I see it.
You are right about the emotion thing...Having invested in properties for 12 years the only property I have ever lost money on...is the one I fell in love with...live and learn.
I agree about the emotional part of purchasing a home or deciding on a home. Some agents think they know just what their clients are looking for because of the information the clients have given them. Don't totally go with that concept. Clients will fall in love with a home that does not even match their criteria and no matter what you say, you could not talk them out of it if they have fallen in love with it. It happened to my husband, a realtor. He worked so hard at trying to find the "right" house for his clients needs. He spent hours, too many hours. The client happened to run into another agent who had a listing that could be purchased in a super quick escrow. That was more important to the client than his specifications on the home and there was probably something about this home that he Fell in Love with. Here is my philosophy......if the client doesn't buy the perfect house the first time, guess what? You have another listing down the road and probably another purchase to represent. Let your clients pick their homes. It is best for everyone involved.

I have to admit I was afraid to watch the video after reading the comments mentioning the DEAD CLOWN! Yikes!
Glad I toughend up and watched the video! Very funny!!!
That was great! It seems you can say nearly anything if you smile!!!
(SMILE) No ma'am we're going to list your house at $159,000 instead of $179,000 and we'll drop it $10,000 every month until it sells!!! Just sign here (BIG SMILE) if only...
Thanks Jeff, I needed a break. I think dead clowns are funny. Reminds me of a classic Mary Tyler Moore show where she can't stop laughing at a dead clowns funeral. Seems Chuckles was killed by the elephant. Now, that's funny.......
That's hysterical! I've had people turn away from a house just because it was in Valhalla which is know for its cemeteries. The fact that the name is derived from Old Norse as the "Hall of the Slain" doesn't help/ The families involved were worried about spirits even though the homes I showed were not known for being permeated with"unspeakable evil." But I guess you never know. Just for the record, we weren't anywhere near the cemetaries.
Thanks for the laugh! I think we should all take lessons from this Realtor on overcoming objections! I think I'll pull that one on an unsuspecting client sometime and see how it goes! LOL (okay, it's got to be the right client, but wouldn't it be so funny??)
Jeff, that was absolutely great. Sometimes a house just feels right. I always say that I can work with anything as long as it has some basics. That video just cracks me up though. Thanks for posting.
I love it, love it! The agent discloses it all so cheerfully.... "the house is actually permeated by unspeakable evil ".... "basically a shapeless mass of malevolent energy".... And yeah, Kristi, I love that e-trade commercial, too. I think the phrase "underestimated the creepiness" has worked its way into my regular thought processes.....
P.S. I think you need to watch it 3 or 4 times to pick up all the little subtleties ... but it's short...
Hi Jeff, that was just too funny and perhaps too real at the same time. I suppose there are REALTORS like this and it was certainly entertaining if nothing else. How do find all this stuff?
