Randy Rhoads
Randy Rhoads was born into a musical family in 1956 and taught himself to play guitar at his mother's San Fernando Valley music store during the wood-paneled '70's. He got plucked out of an early incarnation of the band Quiet Riot and was flown to England to help launch Ozzy Osbourne's solo career. This was way before reality TV and when Ozzy slurred solely because of his alcoholism and not his alcoholism plus advanced age.
Rhoads recorded just two albums but if you picked up an electric guitar in the 1980's because you thought heavy metal thunder was your ticket out of an ordinary midwestern life, you couldn't escape the mystical power emanating from his polka dot Flying V. His musical career spread out across just those 17 songs, but the classic riffs and ripping guitar solos kept me glued to my half speed tape deck for hours on end in pursuit of note-for-note perfection.
Randy Rhoads was a hero of mine when I was a teenager. He died, tragically in a small plane accident, at just 25-years old in 1982. Funny how as an adult I'm no longer so intrigued by the actual music, but more by his contribution to a small, but to me and many others, important segment of society while only in the springtime of his life.
