Coppell is a residential suburb north of Dallas, between Irving and Lewisville. In recent years it has ranked among the top 10 "Best Places to Live" in North Texas, according to D Magazine, and recently was the fifth-fastest-growing city in the metro area.
History:
Although Coppell is a relatively new city (incorporated in 1955), its roots can be traced back to the early 1880s. Transportation has played a key role in the history of Coppell. The Cotton Belt Railroad (part of the St. Louis and Southwestern Texas Railroad) established the Gibbs Station in the community in 1889, providing needed transportation for the area's farmers. That railroad was the major form of transportation into the community until the arrival of paved roads and automobiles in the 1920s. Today D/FW Airport is one of the world's busiest airports, with nearly 60 million passengers passing through the gates annually.
Best known for:
Its proximity to D/FW International Airport. Part of the airport's property is located within Coppell's city limits, and many American Airlines pilots and other employees live there.
