The 2018/19 School Year Has Begun In Charlotte. Drive Safely. Huge Insurance Penalties For Ignoring School Zone Traffic Laws.

Schools in the Charlotte metro area are back in session today. That alone is a good reason to drive safely and responsibly. But did you know just how high the Charlotte and North Carolina penalties are if you don't obey traffic laws in schools zones, such as driving over the speed limit or passing a stopped school bus?

Clearly, these traffic laws are in place to protect our school children.  But what you may not know is that North Carolina insurance companies will not waive points associated with speeding in school zones. In North Carolina, we are not talking just points on your driving license or about a one-time fine for an offense. What we are talking about are penalties that really hit the wallet hard for a long time:

  • A minimum 30% increase in your auto insurance premiums for five years for a conviction for speeding in a school zone at any speed above the posted limit.

  • An 80% increase in your auto insurance premiums for five years for a conviction for passing a stopped school bus.

So be sure to follow the driving laws in school zones... you'll help keep Charlotte kids safe and you'll keep your insurance premiums down.

Excellent reminder Nina Hollander . Once schools start (and they did here last week) I change my driving pattern to avoid all school zones. I'm always amazed at the parents who drop their kids off right in the street because they are in to big of a hurry to pull into the school drop off zone.

Nina,

What an interesting take on car insurance!  We live in a city with lots of schools included higher learning ones, and even down the street from us...And we just had our car insurance payments lowered by 40%.  LOL A

Ron and Alexandra Seigel hi Alexandra... our car insurance rates are quite reasonable... but watch out if you're caught speeding in a school zone or not stopping behind a school bus!

George Souto hi George.... even though school started today, the buses were out rolling along "testing" their routes last week!

Will Hamm hi Will... our police start "hanging out" near the schools as well once the school term begins, especially in the first few weeks.

Bob "RealMan" Timm hi Bob... whichever direction I turn in from my house I'm but a minute or two by car from a school... no avoiding it. And then the school buses are rolling through the neighborhood as well.

I live a block and a half from an elementarily school and it is nice to hear the kids playing. Lucky for me however the traffic to and from the school is largely away from my main route of travel.

Hi Nina- I am surprised at the number of people I see who go speeding through school zones. We go through several on our way to our morning walks and it's so important to keep our wee ones safe.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®,CRS, hi Paul... I remember that feeling all too well... the only difference was that growing up in NYC we walked to school and met up with friends along the way and in high school we took public buses together.

Kathy Streib amazing, isn't it Kathy, to put young lives at risk to get somewhere more quickly by a minute? Makes you wonder what people are thinking. Although here in Charlotte a high schooler was killed by someone driving 15 miles over the speed limit.

Rebecca Gaujot, Realtor®  hi Rebecca... I like that NC makes the penalty so draconian for those who don't obey school zone traffic laws... the problem is that most people don't know about these until it's too late. Maybe if more were aware upfront they'd pay more attention to the laws.

Sally K. & David L. Hanson good morning, Sally and David... amazing to me how many people ignore auto safety around kids in school zones... and don't get me started on the moms I see dropping off kids with a phone and cigarette in hand!

Nina Hollander - Looks like kids in Charlotte had a longer summer vacation than kids in my area. Here, they started 2 weeks ago.

All good points you bring up for school startings in your area. Safety first!

Patricia Feager hi Patricia... schools in South Carolina opened last Monday; here in North Carolina, yesterday. But there's also a difference in when they finish the school year. I don't get starting school in mid-August, but it seems that lots of areas of the nation do so these days.
