Ok....while reading another blog I ran across a comment that sparked some thoughts in my head.  The blog was talking in reference to vehicle signs and using them or not.

While reading the comments I ran across this one:

I had magnetic signs when I first started in the business.  An uninsured, unlicensed driver hit me on purpose with an unregistered car just to collect insurance money - and of course I got the ticket (I was more likely to pay.)  That turned me off magnetic signs permanently.

I agree that they can help get your name out there, but what is the quality of the lead you are generating?  Are they:

  1. qualifed
  2. committed to the process
  3. loyal to you

Usually the answers are, in order, "No.", "No.", and "No!".  I don't want to work with everyone - my specialty is luxury homes, and luxury homeowners do not drive around with notepads looking for people with magnetic signs on their cars so they can do business with them.  Instead, they depend on their referral networks.  Skip the signs, and the bumper stickers - get out there and meet people face to face.

Now the part that was really interesting to me was not the "somebody ran into me" part, rather the three questions that were posed about the quality of lead being generated by vehicle signage.

Now I do own magnets...but I think they spend as much time stuck to the side of my refrigerator as to my truck.  I, too, have been down the road of vehicle signage.

I think as a new agent we are immediately inclined to go and spend a lot of money to plaster our faces and names on the side of our vehicles and I sometimes wonder if this is not an example of "ego marketing" as I like to call it.  Do people really care who you are?  Is the signage on the car going to make them call you to buy thier next house?  Probably not.  I can say that in the time that I have ran magnets and even the time when I had my vehicle's windows lettered....not once, NOT ONCE did I recieve a call from someone wanting to buy or sell.  I did recieve a few others though...LOL.

I have long thought about this since a buyer once said to me...."some real estate people go to such extremes to letter their vehicles that it really makes them look desperate...not someone that I would call"...that stuck, that stuck hard.  Thinking about it, I think the buyer was right, after all, who better to tell us what advertising works than the population we are trying to serve.

Like, I said, I do have magnets...I do put them on once in awhile...but funny as it seems, everytime I peel them off, business goes up!

Anyway, back to the response that I wrote this blog about.  Read through the 3 questions that are posed in the response and ask them of your vehicle advertising.  Is your advertising sending the message you would like?  Is it time for a change?

Now...read the last line of the response again...commit it to memory.  That is the most important line you will ever read when it comes to this business.

GET OUT THERE AND MEET PEOPLE!  QUIT LETTING YOUR SIGNS TRY TO DO THE JOB.  THIS IS A CONTACT SPORT!  NEVER EVER FORGET THAT!!!!!

14 Comments on Vehicle signage.....let's open our minds a little....

JT - I used these during my first year in the business, then I realized that I honestly didn't want everyone knowing my name and phone number if I inadvertantly cut someone off in traffic.

JT,

I think it's important the agents give their advertising more thought. If you work hard at branding yourself as a high-end homes professional, then your car probably shouldn't have magnets on it urging every passer by to call you. If you brand yourself as "by referral only" it's probably not a good idea to advertise yourself on shopping carts.

I don't use car signs.  I think it does some name recognition, but I would rather not have people know where Chuck Carstensen is blazing through traffic.

Couldn't disagree more (maybe)

Here's the deal. The fact that he had magnetic signs on the car was NOT the reason the guy ran into him. It was probably the fact that it was a Mercedes or BMW!! LOL!

Successful Realtors take advantage of every opportunity to market themselves. Whether that includes magnetic car signs or not depends on individual taste.  Car signs of old were cheesy looking. Clipart graphics....only two colors. YUCK!

Nowadays, however, they can be printed in full digital color with high-impact graphics to match the rest of your branding. If your branding is high end looking...then your car signs will simply be another way to promote your brand.

Try this...

Park at an exclusive restaurant...with your Mercedes sporting an elegant magnetic car sign (oxymoron?)...and at the very least, you'll let everyone there know who you are. I've even experienced strangers coming up to me after seeing my photo on the car sign....(they recognized me by the photo and the branding)...and begin asking me questions about their specific real estate needs. It was like handing my business card to every customer in the restaurant that night.

Yes, I believe you have to get out and meet the people....but every single marketing piece you use has a purpose if done well...even if it's just a car sign.

See examples of high-end car signs here: http://www.flyerstoyou.com/page10.html

Just my two cents. <smile>

Somehow, commercial signs on a personal vehicle looks bad to me.  It reminds me of the "sandwich boards" people wore during the depression ("Will work for food" and so forth).  It looks desperate in a way.

I'm not crazy about bus bench advertising either.  And if you look at the stats for return on investment using these techniques, they're pretty unimpressive.

I sure hope that nobody thinks that signs will get all your business. They are a suppliment like all other advertising. What is nice about a sign is when you make the contact they may recognize your name. you are right this is a people business. you have to make contact.

In reading about the accident I had to wonder if that was in the US. Someone hits me and I get the ticket?

The signs arent so bad, I dont like when they paint thier whole car, I too think it spells desperate.

I don't want them.  When I am taking buyers around, I don't want them to look like circus animals on parade

I won't go for the magnets or the full wrap, but I have lisence plate cover with my name, company and website.  I don't think it screem desperate, but it does put my name out there and I don't feel like the  circus animal on parade like the above commentor.

JT,

I have a small section of my rear window (non obstructing from my driving view, and about 1/5th the window size) on my car.....I had the same, only larger on my pick-up gate before.  I have received about 1000 times the cost of the art work in good qualified leads that I have settled over the years.

I am constantly stopped and talked to because they saw my signage and that to me is GREAT face to face time with someone I would have not met otherwise (you know are not-mets?).  Plus well spent marketing dollars that I never have to put out again (unless I buy a new car).

As for qualified......are any of our Clients truly qualified before we get the opportunity to meet and talk to them?  Buyer's always have a grand idea of what they want and what they can afford.....our job is to make sure that is the reality of the matter and work inside the true parameter's.   Then, when needed, we work to get them qualified.....once that happens the sale becomes a realty or at least a possibility......

If you plan on driving like an idiot or afraid that someone might see you where you shouldn't be then for sure this is not for you.

I am also sure there are many Agent's willing to take your less than "luxury" business from you.

Just my two-cents.....have a great day and continued success.

JT, There are a lot of pro's and con's to this argument.  Guess it all depends on you local area and your own desires.

I have to agree with Dan, I am often stopped and have people talk Real Estate because of my name and company logo on my car.  Just yesterday a lady asked for my business card because she plans on selling her home.  For the $80 I spent for the lettering, it is pretty inexpensive advertising.

I was recently in Washington state and I noticed that very few vehicles had window letter for their businesses on them.  Where I live it seems everyone advertises on their car.  Magnetic signs are a rarity, everyone has professional window lettering done.

Everyone makes such good arguments. I just think that car signs need to have quality. A photo is good, if they can actually recognize you from it.

I do not have mine on right now, and I actually enjoy the feeling of being unknown as a Realtor. I have a oiece of mind on way to listing appointments.

Keep selling and WINNING!

I prefer to take a more subtle approach (in my opinion).  I have the license plate holder with my contact information, but the vast majority of people that strike up a conversation because of my license plate LIST U.  In Virginia, we have affinity group tags and mine is printed with the big blue R for the Realtor Association, so they put to two together and want to talk real estate.  A guy at 7-11 wanted to chat as I was on my way to a home inspection, so it was a brief conversation, but he volunteered his name & number and we'll be talking this weekend.

By the way, my wife has 2LISTU on her car...
