Recycle Bins

The Bottom Line on Recycling Do's and Dont's

There is no single standard for recycling - every community sets their own.

Phone Books and Pizza Boxes are often not welcomed by recycling programs.

Not all plastic can be recycled. Look for the recycling symbol to be sure.

Did you know?

Your local community or trash pickup firm can usually advise on recycling regulations.

Do Recycle:

  • High-quality plastics labeled with number one and two recycling symbols.
  • Food and beverage containers, such as milk, soda, water, salad dressings, etc.
  • Jars and canisters such as those used for peanut butter, soap, and aspirin bottles, etc.
  • Mail, junk and otherwise, including brochures, fliers, white/light envelopes, etc.
  • Aluminum, tin and steel cans, such as soda, beer, tuna, vegetable, etc.
  • Printed paper such as newspaper, magazines, phone books, legal pads, etc.

Don't Recycle (usually):
Be sure to check with your local recycling officials, since some of the items below CAN be recycled in some communities.

  • Plastic bags
  • Newspaper delivery bags
  • Styrofoam
  • Lids from glass containers
  • Pizza boxes
  • Phone books
  • Mirrors
  • Aerosol cans
  • Paint cans
  • Wax paper
  • Food-soiled paper
  • Window glass
  • Ceramics
  • Light bulbs
  • Microwaveable food trays

Hi Lisa Von Domek - This is always good information to go green.  Each homeowner or resident should check with their community to see what is acceptable and where the nearest bins are located if you do not have a personal recycle bin.

Great public service announcement, Lisa! As seldom as we order pizzas, I always hated putting those boxes in the trash. About 3 years ago, Charlotte began allowing pizza boxes and I'm so glad. It just seemed like such a waste to put it in the trash!

Good morning, Lisa Von Domek after reading the two categories, I'll admit, I've made a few errors... not many though!!

Hi Lisa... I'm all about recycling... you have some don'ts on your list that are do's in my area. And fortunately, Publix has a place to recycle styrofoan containers, which I bring over on a regular basis.

Hi Lisa Von Domek I firmly believe that no one should ever pollute our environment. That said, I think we need to bring back incinerators. Most of this trash could be burned to produce enough energy to heat our water (or our homes)  without polluting the environment. A very efficient fire with "scrubbers" in the chimney could produce the energy WITHOUT polluting the air.
