Keeping Perishable Food Safe During A Power Outage/After A Flood

It's fair to assume that when Hurricane Florence hits the Carolinas in the next several days, most everyone will experience power outages to one degree or another. and with temperatures still in the 80's in the coming days, it's important to know how to protect any perishable food you might have in your homes. And one good rule to keep in mind: "if in doubt, throw it out."

Nina Hollander - Be safe! I thought of you first when I heard it'll be on the border of North and South Carolina.

You'll be in my thoughts & prayers, as will everyone impacted by this monster storm.

Patricia Feager hi Patricia... they keep changing the projections, but the worst hit will be along the coastline and we are hundreds of miles inland.

Nina - Today would be the time day to cook any of your better perishable food and plan of throwing out the rest if the power goes out.

Grant Schneider hi Grant... fortunately, I don't have much in the house to cook as I often buy what we need as I need it. Not sure cooking solves the problem... what's cooked has to be cooled and if we lose power for more than a day or so, it will also need to be tossed.

Roy Kelley hi Roy... I think at some level it's tough to be fully prepared when there are so many unknowns.

There is much loss of food and hope people will lean toward being safe and throw out anything they are unsure of.

Debbie Reynolds hi Debbie... because it's just the two of us, I never have huge supplies of perishable food or frozen... I buy as I need it fresh. But even that being said, if we lose power for more than a day or two, I'll be tossing some stuff, as well. Hate that kind of waste.

Gloria Todor hi Gloria... we weathered Florence fine... three days of rain and we did have some flooded streets not far from us, but our home and neighborhood were fine and no loss of power. We can only be thankful.
