Middlesex County, Virginia is the finest in rural living in Chesapeake Bay Country. Middlesex County is a small peninsula surrounded on one side by the Rappahannock River and on another by the Piankatank River. The county is located close to major urban areas such as Richmond, Virginia and Washington D.C. With approximately 10,000 residents, the county encompasses 130 square miles of land bordering the Chesapeake Bay. Mathews County is South of Middlesex County, King and Queen County are west of it, and Lancaster County is Northeast. The county seat is Saluda. Each year, an annual Oyster Festival in Urbanna is held to celebrate the shellfish harvest from the Chesapeake Bay.

A Place in American History: Middlesex County Virginia

Settlement of Middlesex County began in 1640. Present day Middlesex County was officially part of Lancaster County in 1669. Urbanna was established as a port city by 1680, serving as a shipping center and later as a commercial hub. Deltaville is also a bustling center, situated at the mouth of the Rappahannock and Piankatank Rivers. Deltaville was well known as a center for the wooden boat building craft and trade dating back to the Early American era. Saluda, the present day seat of Middlesex County, is also a center of activity in Middlesex County.

Famous Americans from Middlesex County, Virginia

Robert Latane Montague was born in Middlesex County on May 23, 1819. He led a distinguished political career that spanned the Civil War era in Virginia. Montague was a member of the Virginia State House of Delegates, Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, and a Representative from Virginia in the Confederate Congress. Montague is buried in Middlesex County, in the Christ Church Episcopal cemetery in Urbanna, Virginia. Richard May resided in Middlesex County, Virginia. May was a Republican from Middlesex County, Virginia who was appointed delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1964 and became a candidate for U.S. Senator of Virginia that same year.

Middlesex County is mostly rural with country estates and historic properties dating back to the Colonial and Civil War eras. The county has a significant amount of waterfront property either on or with access to the Chesapeake Bay. The town of Deltaville sits on the junction of the Rappahannock and Piankatank Rivers, making Middlesex County easily accessible to the Chesapeake Bay by boat via tidal rivers. In short, Middlesex County is a wonderful location to either purchase or build a waterfront estate.

Eckhard's restaurant in Topping, Virginia features German and Italian cuisine and some of the freshest seafood in the Chesapeake Bay region. Eckhard's is conveniently located about 1.5 miles south of the Rappahannock River Bridge directly on Virginia Rt. 3.

Historical Landmarks in Middlesex County

Historic Wilton dates to circa 1750, and sits on 25 acres of land. Wilton was a plantation home surrounded by 6,000 acres at one time. Though it does not contain modern kitchens or baths, the estate property includes original architectural features from the craftsman period, with stunning handcrafted panel and wood floors throughout. Historic Wilton is a good example of the types of estate properties that remain in Middlesex County Virginia, long after the Colonial era has ended, linking Americans directly to their past. Another famous historic landmark in Middlesex County is Christ Church Parish. Christ Church dates to the 17th Century and was a locus for the Church of England in the new colonies. Unlike church records in surrounding Parishes where records were destroyed in the Civil War, Christ Church has an ancient vestry book dating to 1666. The cemetery of Christ Church is an honored place to be buried. Many notable colonial and Civil War era dignitaries were either buried at Christ Church Cemetery or interred there after being moved. The Urbanna Courthouse, built in 1766, is on the National Registry of Historic Places and is one of only 11 Colonial courthouses still standing today.

Deltaville Marinas

Deltaville Marina on Jackson Creek offers gas and diesel fuel, laundry, electric, and a lounge with cable television and air conditioning. Fishing Bay Harbor Marina is just one mile outside Deltaville and offers 42 transient slips, deepwater access, a ship's store, pool, laundry, lounge, and more. There are other marinas in Deltaville, including the Chesapeake Cove Marina, The Deltaville Marina, and the Norview Marina. These marinas do not offer transient slips, though they do sell gasoline and diesel and have some facilities for use.

Urbanna Marinas

Regent Point Marina caters to families with amenities like bicycles, canoes, a playground, picnic area and kayaks. The Regent Point Marina is located on Locklies Creek connected to the Rappahannock River, close to Urbanna, Virginia in Topping. Upton's Point Marina and Locklies Marina, and Greenvale Creek Marina are also located in or near Urbanna, Virginia.

Middlesex County Wineries

Belle Mount Vineyards in Tappahannock are just across the river from Tappahannock in nearby Warsaw. This multi dimensional winery sells handcrafted Virginia wines and rents cottages, provides a banquet area, a picnic area, and more. Tastings and tours are free and the winery is open to the public from March 15-December 15, Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Middlesex County Outdoor Activities

Boating, sailing fishing, crabbing, waterskiing, camping, biking, and other sports are popular in Middlesex County Virginia. Charter boats sponsoring fishing trips on the Chesapeake Bay are available throughout the season. Visitors and residents can easily access full-service marinas, launching ramps, charter services and campgrounds.

Middlesex County Proximity to Major Cities

Middlesex County is less than an hour from Fredericksburg, Virginia, and about two hours to Washington D.C. and Richmond, Virginia. The close proximity to major urban areas allows easy access and makes Middlesex County the perfect place for a second home or retirement home.

Middlesex County Public Schools

The Middlesex County School System educates 1300 students. There are approximately 120 teachers in three schools. The newest school in the County is the Middlesex Elementary School, housing grades PreK-5. St. Clare Walker Middle School staff teaches children in grades 6-8. Middlesex High School, renovated in April 2003, accommodates grades 9-12. All three of the public schools in Middlesex County have met the Virginia Standard of Learning (SOL) accreditation standards. The Chesapeake Bay Governor's School focuses on Marine and Environmental Science. This is the perfect school for students who excel in science or math or have an interest in these fields.

Middlesex County Private Schools

Christchurch School in Middlesex County, Virginia was founded on Episcopal principles and serves a co-educational student body of approximately 130 students. The campus sits on 125 acres alongside the Rappahannock River in Middlesex County. Day school tuition averages $15,000 per year, and $35,500 per year for boarding.

Community Colleges

Rappahannock Community College has two campuses. One campus is in Glenns, Virginia, nearby Saluda, in Gloucester County. The second campus is in Warsaw, Virginia, in the heart of Lancaster County. The Rappahannock Community College has Art and Sciences degrees, and Applied Sciences degrees that include Engineering and Technology, Nursing, and Business Management. Richmond, Virginia is about one hour's commute from Middlesex County. In Richmond, Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of Richmond offer undergraduate and graduate programs in a variety of degrees.

Contemporary Middlesex County on the Chesapeake Bay

Middlesex County Virginia has three important cities: Urbanna, Deltaville, and Saluda, the county seat. All of these cities have waterfront estates, full-service marinas, boat launches, seafood restaurants, and more. The marine lifestyle in this county appeals to the boater who wants to remain close to the Chesapeake Bay, while keeping safe harbor from storms. Middlesex County might by small, in terms of the number of residents. But the county's rural southern charm, and its waterman's history makes for a pleasant place to purchase waterfront property as a second home or a primary residence.
