Comments, Marketing Value & Points | Two Out Of Three Are Valuable !!

Commenting is most often considered a means of gaining points. Those points have their use but are often a detriment to the main focus of ActiveRain.  It’s not about the points. It’s about the quality of marketing.

Commenting is a marketing tool. It’s a tool that benefits the blogger.  When one comments on a blog post, it’s important to be mindful of the fact that the post was written for consumers to read.  There is a target of marketing for each blog post, and that target will be reading the comments, along with the post.

To write a comment, and have that one thought in mind, will change the flavor of many of the comments that are submitted here. Comments should be promoting the focus of the blog post and the blogger.  “Promoting” is a task that should be accomplished with every comment.

When you’re commenting on a post, be aware of how the reader will interpret what you’re writing for a comment. The comments should not only be complimentary, but they should also complement the meaning of the post and the value shared by the blogger.

If there’s a challenge to be made, do it professionally. Another thought would be to discuss it in a blog post of your own and not sabotage the thoughts of the original blogger. Commenting, by using common sense and the golden rule, always works well for everyone.

Just another thought for the moment….

Hi BarbaraT- Well done young lady!!!! And it cannot be said too many times.  What separates us from other platforms is our desire to help and support each other. When a post is consumer driven, we have to remember this and keep our comments to ourselves or write our own post about it or email the blogger if there is an error.

I've read too many comments from members on a consumer-focused post where the commenter expresses their dislike of something about a listing.

Use that grey matter between our ears before we press send.

Oh, I totally agree, Barbara - of course, you knew that! Something must have happened recently that I missed because this is the second such 'reminder' here in the Rain!

When it happens to me, I will say that I take the high-road - if someone else wants to be negative, it reflects poorly on them, not me. When I get a negative comment, it tends to anger others more than me! I just know they're showing their true colors...

You cannot lose if you 'use common sense' and 'practice the Golden Rule' in all comments in blogs, in life, in work, and in play Barbara Todaro.  Great Blog and great reminder!  To do any less shows you are not helping others, nor helping yourself.  Humor at someone else's expense, or just being rude does not show professionalism in real estate, and for me, shows you will do anything to be that center of attention, and to think you are winning by besting someone.  Many good suggestions from others here, on how to 'handle' a situation where you are passionate!

Barbara my make is you make an excellent point in this post and I enjoyed the interaction of the comments, there were three that really caught my eyes ....and quite frankly  with that said...there are a few individuals on this platform that should have been removed because of lack of ethics and morals but sadly they are still here so with that said I will continue to be a Don Quixote   .....

Hi Barbara

You've shared some pretty sage advice here on commenting. Seems to me if you respond in a professional and respectful manner and treat the writer as you would like to be treated...even if you disagree...all will be well. That said, the copy and paste comments add very little - I don't get why people do this!

I completely agree, and please don't turn the comment around by saying how wonderful YOU are. Your post does make me wonder though. Do you allow readers (non-AR members) to comment on your posts? I disabled that feature years ago in the fear of getting spam comments. I'm just curious and that might be an idea for another post.

I allow everyone to comment and have received comments from readers....not members....and I respond to each one... they each have a name, not anonymous....

I DO get spam but that's when my posts are featured.... I report each one... the 1000-2000 word spam comments that are posted to get google juice.... I delete them probably before AR can block them...

and YOU are wonderful.... do you like that???? just being a wise-ass....sorry.

I'm glad you understood my intent! I disabled the feature because I had a vicious stalker and didn't have the energy to follow up on every rude potential comment. Maybe now I can enable the option...

And yes, we are both wonderful!

well, you have full control of it and could always revert back to disabling if the stalker returns....  Pat Starnes-Front Gate Realty

Hi Barbara Todaro - I doubled checked to see if this was featured, and of course it was!   I missed this one.

You are completely right. We are here to market.  Whether it is ourselves, services, properties, or suggestions for clients....that is the goal. We should never sabotage the writer.  I guess that is why we can delete a comment if necessary.

For me, I also want to learn about other points of view and techniques so I will comment on that as well!  Great article...!!

Hi Sheri Sperry - MCNE® we should never need to delete a comment.... one can disagree and be civil about relaying an opinion... we often have a different opinion but should never have a nasty deliverance....

The art of comment writing is somewhat of an art.  You can tell those who would just comment to get a point or two, versus those who engage with the ideas on display and perhaps stir the part for the discussion to take a mind of its own.  I know that seeing posts with high engagement allows me to linger on the post a little longer.  The number of comments is also a testament to the content you have provided for everyone else.

Excellent featured post.  I bet you'd write a great post on commenting etiquette - just saying!  So many times I see comments that have no merit, include links, and other items that have no business in the comments.  As you note, sending a private message is a much better option than any disparaging "guidance" that isn't positive.
