Events in Delray Beach-Park(ing) Day Has Come to Delray!

This is so exciting!  On Friday, September 21, 2018, Delray business owners and residents will join other communities in a day when parking spaces are turned into parks!

Park(ing) Day

Friday

September 21, 2018

11:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Pineapple Grove (by Delray Art)

The Set (NW 5th Street by Spady Museum)

You can read more about Park(ing) Day, which was first held in 2005, and see some of the creative pop up parks from 2017.

The idea is to inspire creative uses for metered parking spaces in an effort to add some green space and art to the spaces.

The event is held on the third Friday in September in cities around the country. It sounds like a fun way to support the community and call attention to the need for green space amongst all of the concrete.

How fun. I've never heard of this. So where does everyone park then?

Hi Kathy Streib, this is an awesome idea. It would be great if the NYC did this, even if it's for just a day.

Thinking out of the box, that is what I love about your town, making it fun for your town people and sure the business owners make out also.

Hi Kathy,
I checked out the link and that is such a great idea.  So many possibilities for the temporary use of parking spaces.  Thanks for sharing. I had never heard of such an event but I love it.

That's an interesting concept.  I'd love to see how that would pan out in reality.  Like where do those who want to attend the event actually park?

I don't think we've had a park(ing) day in Sacramento. We draw great art with chalk in the street, we paint the inside of abandoned hotels with art, and we have even painted our tree trunks blue, including playing virtual art games through an app but no pop-up parks. Maybe because we have so many parks already!

Kathy,

San Francisco did that several years ago.  Parking spaces became areas for outdoor dining.  And Rodeo drive has incorporated greenery in their sidewalks along with park benches.  SB has always had lots of plant on their sidewalks which are nice an wide.  A

Hi Dorie Dillard CRS GRI ABR I'll bet Austin has something similar!!! It's the perfect place for it.

Barbara Todaro my favorite is the bagpiper that often strolls along the Avenue. I love bagpipes.

Donald Urschalitz and the season isn't even here yet.

How funny Gabe Sanders There was quite a controversy when they added meters to Atlantic Avenue. They don't start until noon though.

Wayne Martin We really are pretty sedate.

Sally K. & David L. Hanson you could organize something.

Brian England you know, I think that most every place we call home has something special to do.

Michael Jacobs Hope you check out some of the previous spaces that were set up. Very creative.

Bob "RealMan" Timm at least now you can pay with an app on your phone.

Sharon Tara it's just for the day and Delray still has a lot of street parking and garages and lots. At night, Atlantic Avenue is pretty much valet.

Beth Atalay Thankfully, Delray has kept the sidewalks wide enough to accommodate sidewalk dining and planted trees around.

Roy Kelley I hope to make it there on Friday.

Will Hamm I think that anytime you can get the public out for events like these, it gives the local businesses some good exposure.

Hi Carol Williams I remember reading about it several years ago but had not heard of it since then.

Myrl Jeffcoat I think that people would have to find street parking or one of the lots nearby.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents I like the idea of painting in the abandoned hotels and the chalk art.  I'd imagine that you do have more parks where you are!  I've seen Delray do a lot more in the way of putting some green space along the sidewalks and along Atlantic Ave.

Grant Schneider I'm going to try!

Ron and Alexandra Seigel People weren't happy when the city considered getting rid of sidewalk dining. It's part of the lifestyle!

Scott Godzyk come on...you've been saying that for years!!!
