We know that participating in sports can be beneficial to health, help keep your weight down, lower your blood pressure and improve your heart and lung function. But did you know that regularly playing tennis or badminton could cut your chance of dying young in half? Expert research seems to back up the claim.

A study, published in 2016, by the British Journal of Sports Medicine, indicates a firm agreement. The study tracked 80,306 adults ages 30 and over. The respondents were quizzed about their health and exercise through at various points between 1994 and 2008.

The survival of each participant, average age 52, was tracked for about nine years. Compared to the people who had not been doing one of the physical activities the survey tracked, the risk of death from any cause is almost half for racquet sports players at 47%. Other sports were also tracked and indicated that the mortality risk was also 28% lower for swimmers, 27% lower for aerobics fans and 15% lower for cyclists.

And when it came to heart disease and stroke, racquet sports aced it again with a 56% reduced mortality risk, and swimmers and aerobics fans also saw 41% and 36% less risk, respectively.

In addition, tennis is almost as mentally stimulating as it is physically, so it’s great for aging folks who want to keep their brain intact.

In conclusion, tennis reduces the risk of death at any age. Is there a better reason pick up your racket and play tennis more often? I think not.

I don't play tennis, but I do swim on average about 5 hours a week.  Even more during summer!

Joe, Tennis does look like a great way to stay in shape. Too bad I never got hooked. As we age it is so important to stay active!

Yes, it is just too easy to park on the sofa and sit back. Everyone needs to find something they enjoy.
