Lately I have been obsessed with Active Rain. My obsession didn't take hold at first, I was a member for a couple months before I even realized what to do with it. But once it took - I was hooked. But why? I've joined other social sites and never really been interested to the degree I am at Active Rain. Perhaps it was a matter of timing. In a business that is changing, whether it be real estate or health care - everyone is forced to examine how they are doing business. During my own self examination, I re-discovered my interest in all things technology. Until now, incorporating those interests into my real estate career never really took off. Then, one night as I began blogging - I had an epiphany. Suddenly my worlds of Real Estate and the Internet/technology came together.

But this life changing event was more than an isolated incident. I discovered my online "persona" so to speak. The advent of social networking brings a new level of transparency to the business world. People we do business with now have photos online, profiles at myspace or have their names listed in membership lists on the web. Suddenly, it has become easier to know more about the people behind the titles. This level of transparency brings with it questions of privacy, personal responsibility and the obvious benefits of networking. Even now, I am still discovering how to connect all these different online aspects of my life. I use myspace to connect with friends, LinkedIn to do business and Facebook for family links. But why keep those different areas of my life separate? I've done plenty of business with both friends and family. The challenge is learning how to use each of these tools in different ways.

So, I arrive here - tweaking and adding to my various online profiles at different social networking sites. Below is a list of different networks available and how they see themselves or how I am using them:

  • MySpace - gained its notoriety with teens. I mostly use this site for connecting with friends - a profile of my more personal life. Because of the inherent personal nature of MySpace you need to connect on a more personal level. MySpace has a heavy music component and has helped launch many musicians.
  • LinkedIn - a monster of a business networking site I am just learning to use. Here's a great article by Mario Sundar "10 ways to use LinkedIn"
  • FaceBook -Facebook has brought privacy online! Due to its lack of public profiles (someone must be approved before reading details about you), my brothers, sisters, nieces & nephews have latched onto Facebook. I am mostly using Facebook for family connections.
  • ActiveRain - THE social network for Realtors. Need I say anything else?
  • Twitter - a service that lets you keep friends and family up to date on "What you are doing". I don't think I want to be that responsible to everyone I know!
  • Jaiku - a social networking site that was recently acquired by google. It is similar to twitter - you keep friends up to date on what you are doing. Right now, you have to request an invite - probably because they are going through changes related to the acquisition.
  • MeetUp - a way to connect to people locally who are interested in similar activities. Looking for someone to jump out of a plane with? Find them at meetup.com
  • Lyro - similar to linkedin. A business community - but not as robust as linkedin. I found out about linked in after googling an old boss I was trying to connect with. I found his lyro card and sent him an email. He called me the same day!!
  • Plaxo - just discovered this one tonight and joined. Their tag line "Connect your personal and professional life in one place". I basically copied and pasted everything from my linkedin profile.
  • Pownce - unless you have friends on here already, I'm not sure why you'd join. Seems like a well designed site, but I just don't have the energy to join one more site tonight!

There are a lot more sites out there. A great resource is this list of social networking sites at wikipedia. Enjoy!

Hi Bo, great post. Thank you for the list. We are mainly blogging on Active Rain and with as much time as we spend on it not sure we want to look into any others. : )

Bo,  I think the attraction of this site is that people like to associate with people like them.  In the Rain everyone enjoys talking and learning about Real Estate.  Also, people are genuinely interested in what you have to say and not just waiting for their turn to talk.

Patty, Scott & Kevin - You don't necessarily have to spend a lot of time on these sites.  Simply signing up, creating a profile and adding links to your site can improve your search engine rankings.  Case in Point - Wellcomemat.com.  I signed up a couple days ago.  All I did was create a profile.  I didn't even upload any video.  Now, my profile on wellcomemat.com comes up on page one when I search for my name in google.

Oh my gosh - There's so much more out there I need to investigate = I like you have become obsessed with AR though - I did hear good things about Plaxo - I'm on LinkedIn but I need to read this article you referenced -   Not sure what the marketing benefit is to me but the ability to share info ./concerns with fellow realtors is priceless...  I've read your posts before and am surprised you're new to this - GOOD STUFF!

All the different sites can be daunting.  Thanks for the organized run down.  It's hard to find enough time in the day to keep up with them all.  I do think AR is positively the best of the bunch.

Hello Bo in Illinois...we share that AR may not have been the first networking site we joined but it is the one that we first became obsessed with. Once getting in touch with the people at the Rain....the whole networking concept became clearer to me - making it easier to revisit other networking communities with a renewed understanding and purpose of sorts. It's great sharing with professional people especially in a similar industry maybe because we know THEY GET IT - get what we're saying before we say a word at times and I love the sharing of info, tips, stories, and advice between everyone here at AR.  I agree social networking adds tons of transparency and for Real Estate industry professionals - AR offers an element of comfort knowing "we got people" and yes, that kind of takes the edge off jumping in and being exposed (so to speak)....excellent post and great list. Nice to meet you here at the Rain Bo! Cheers from Seattle!

4:11pm • #28

Too much blogging and internet surfing. You need to get back to selling and listing homes for sale. Real estate professionals spending too much on the internet will lead to broke agents who sit at home and want to pretend they are working by surfing the web and blogging. You should be obessed with prospecting for clients.

When it comes to social networking you really need to have a solid game plan becuase you can invest way too much time on noise that will never close a sale. While I always encourage exploration and experimentation 90% of marketing activity should be spent on proven activites that yield results. By far the best place to spend time is to create a quality blog that is built on thoughtful content.

Hello Bo....Don't forget my website: www.HutHub.com

Think of it as a cross between MySpace and Craigslist for Real Estate.....it provides the Social Networking capabilities of MySpace (without the clutter), while providing FREE Property Listings / Wanted Ads like Craigslist (without the sprawling, time-sensitive content).

HutHub is my attempt to help EVERYBODY in the Real Estate Industry connect DIRECTLY with eachother....Private Individuals (Buyers, Sellers, Renters, Owners/Landlords) can create profiles and interact directly with local Real Estate Professionals (Agents, Investors, Lenders, Contractors, Property Services, etc.) without giving away personal information or paying for costly advertisements.

And to be clear, HutHub is NOT a  Lead Generation system!!!

I am a Real Estate Broker myself, and I created HutHub because I know that most (if not all) Lead Generation systems are a total rip-off, and what people really need is a FREE common platform to connect with eachother....DIRECTLY

HutHub is currently in BETA release, and I'd like to invite you, and anybody else here on Activerain to try it out and give me your thoughts.....shoot me an email through my Activerain profile and I will setup & upgrade your HutHub account FREE for life just for trying it out and giving me your opinions.

I don't mean to spam your post here, but I truly believe this is relevant to the subject matter of your blog.  Thanks

Peter, sounds like a great site.  I'll definitely give it a try!

5:32am • #45

Peter...there's some problems with your site.  First, I've registered twice, (an hour apart) and neither time did I get an email to confirm my registration so I can't enter anything.  Secondly there appears to be a bunch of trash / fake listings in there from CreditReport.com not to mention in California you got a guy with a 10,000,000 square foot house...obviously trying to get the top position.  I'd flag it for "Spam" IF I was signed up.

8:16am • #46

Hey Peter...I got in.  Your emails went direct to spam folder.

8:19am • #47

David.....Thanks for signing up, I just upgraded your HutHub account to FULL permissions ($140 monthly value) so that you have UNLIMITED Property Listings & Profiles, all your Listings & Profiles will be TOP LISTED in searches, and all your Listings & Profiles will receive TOP BANNER placement.....this is FOR LIFE, and you'll never need to purchase anything.

As for the fake listings, please mark as SPAM whenever you see them, but I am now removing the ones you mentioned.

As for emails going to SPAM folder, I'm working on that too......its so hard to get my server's IP address whitelisted on the major email services (AOL, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.), so as a result HutHub's emails go to the SPAM folder....be sure to mark all emails coming from "@huthub.com" as SAFE in your email inbox.

THANKS AGAIN for trying out HutHub.com

Hey Bo, I noticed that AR is not listed in the wikipedia list of social networking sites?  Wonder why?  Social networking is a great way to network with other real estate industry professionals and to grow your reach on the Internet.  I always advise real estate agents that I come across to join as many sites as possible to promote their business and services.  Gotta love the net!
