What is it to You? Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples' Day?

Each year, more schools, companies, states and universites opt to celebrate the alternative to Columbus Day: Indeigenous Peoples' Day.

Instead of honoring Christopher Columbus, this day is used to recognize the Indigenous People of the United States: Native Americans. Considering they were the first inhabitants of the land, advocates press that because Columbus did not "discover" America in 1492 but instead began the colonization of it. For decades, Native American activists have advocated abolishing Columbus Day, which became a federal holiday in 1937.

So this year, both Indigenous Peoples' Day and Columbus Day are on Monday, October 8th. How do you feel about it all? Personally, I think that it is right to celebrate BOTH occasions as there are several states, and major cities that already recognize Indigenous Peoples' Day as the main holiday.

It is important to celebrate and appreciate all that makes our nation such a wonderful place.

I kind of like the idea of putting more emphasis on "Indigenous Peoples Day."

I guess I have no real preference.  I can see both sides of the issue

Today will always be Columbus Day but if someone else feels the need to celebrate it in a different way I don't have a problem with it.
