Microsoft Outlook Tech Tip - Spam and Pop-ups!

I DON'T LIKE SPAM...

To reduce your email spam, turn off the preview pane in Microsoft Outlook.  This will allow you to still partially
read the email without actually opening it.  The preview pane is usually on by default.  By clicking on the email
to delete it, you aren't opening it and exposing yourself to future spam from the sender, or others that
might purchase your email address from other spammers.  I have found this to be a very effective way to
minimize spam without losing potential clients and referrals that find me on the internet.  You can setup rules in
outlook to move certain emails to the junk mail folder, but I find when you do this, you end up with multiple
folders with multiple emails and it can quickly become very time consuming and difficult to manage.

For Pop-ups

You may want to also consider running a program like adaware to minimize the amount of pop-ups that can
manifest in your computer. Many websites like to download spywares and trojans to your computer and hide
them in difficult to find locations. These spywares report back to the website where you visit on the web so they
can send you more and more popups. Here's what adaware can do for you:

1. AdWareAlert scans your computer for hidden parasites and removes them permanently.
2. Their advanced system cleaner works to repair and correct errors caused by ad and spywares
and tweaks your PC for optimal performance.
3. Annoying pop-up ads are blocked before they have a chance to bother you again.

Lavasoft offers a FREE download of the program if you're interested.

I am always looking for ways to help my fellow computer users to maximize their computer performance without
jeopardizing the integrity and security of their systems.  There are many articles and posts regarding SPAM and
Pop-ups, I thought this would be a great tip at getting you more prepared with your cyber Real Estate endeavors
and your online communications.

Thanks for the info.  I try to minimize my use of any Microsoft program wherever possible as as such I seem to get less junk sent my way.  I also use Adaware and AVG anti-spyware.  Adaware runs quicker but AVG seems to be more thorough at finding and removing spyware. I'll be happy when and if the NWMLS is expanded to work with Firefox and Linux.  I don't know if they are harder to write viruses for or if no one has a grudge against them.

This is an awesome tip! You can also use "Organize" to automatically filter regular spam you get to go directly to the trash can, never have to see it cluttering your inbox up anymore.

I would also suggest a firewall program that is intuitive. I use Zone Alarm's free firewall, and it learns from the choices you make as to whether or not to allow certain programs to access internet or privileged resources. This will prevent a lot of spyware from ever making it onto your computer. Another program I use is the tried and true Spybot S & D which includes a little program called the Tea Timer that will protect certain system settings. This also helps to disallow malicious programs from gaining access to your privileged resources.  After installing those two programs I have noticed a significant decline in the number of spyware/adware I have to remove on a weekly basis. This not only means that I incur less spam, but I also surf safer and faster, and that my data and my client's data remains safe from the scrupulous entities out there.

More Outlook Settings

With Outlook 2003 and newer you have the capability of right clicking on a message and telling Outlook whether to:

  • Add Sender to blocked sender list
  • Add Sender to Safe Sender List
  • Add Sender Domain To Safe Sender List
  • Add Recipient to Safe Sender List

Furthermore there are additional options you can apply to junk email to filter it out if you right click a message and go to  the Junk Email bar, you will see advanced options at the bottom which allows you to tell Outlook how aggressive to be in filtering out spam. You can drastically reduce your spam you receive with this setting.  I have found that if you have your mail provided by one of the major ISP's such as GMAIL Yahoo, MSN, AOL, that there are spam filtering settings and typically a threshold to adjust and further reduce the amount of spam that ever enters your Outlook program. It's all a balance of filtering without removing the content you want to allow. You could always add people to a safe sender's list to ensure that their messages always make it through unfiltered. This is senn in the Junk email option above.

Good luck filtering out Spam. This is a huge challenge we all face and must fight efficiently in order to save as much time as possible.

Brad-  Good tips.  I didn't know about Microsoft preview pane.  I have been receiving mail from senders who I do not trust and this should fix my problem.  Thanks

Thanks for the tips. I've dabbled with those things, but I still don't understand how certain companies can always make it into you good file even when you have added them to the junk file.

Brad, I went into high gear with the advanced options, thank you for the tips.  Spam has been a major concern of mine as it just sets me off when I receive them.

Brad,

Thanks for the post. I can concur. These programs help to eliminate spywares and trojans that can slow down your system's response time.

Brad, good info I have had adaware for a few years now and it seems to help stop all those pop-ups

I have used AdAware since it came out a few years back. Microsoft was actually reccommending it as a data-minor finder. I was real pleased with it's performance and ability to help with pop-ups! It's a great tool and I think the download is still free. Thanks for the response Robert.
