What's in a Name?

By

Are you one of those people who remembers someones name after only meeting them once?  If so, you are amazing!  It is not an easy thing to do.

For me, it is sometimes difficult to remember names.  My Notes section of my iPhone X is filled with names of people I come into contact with.  I even have the guy who works at the Dog Food Shop where we buys food for our two golden retrievers every 8 weeks.  It feels good to walk in and say Hi Nate, how are you today?

I like to think that my name is rather unique.  I have not met many Belinda's along the way and I would think that would help people to remember my name.  Not so much!

The worst thing ever is when people reply to an email from me where I have my signature block with my name clear as day and they address me as "Brenda"

I see that and wonder just how hard it can possibly be to actually read my name and reply appropriately.  I don't let them off the hook though.  No way.

I usually reply with "First, let me point out that my name is Belinda and not Brenda".

Maybe I should reply with "Thanks Joe Blow" or some other name other than theirs but then I would be as ridiculous as them.

Instead, I will keep playing the game.

I guess it could be worse.

Originally, my mom was going to name me Dorothy.  I can't imagine going through life as DOT.  She was watching a movie called "Johnny Belinda" when she went into labor and hence the name.  Not "Johnny Brenda".

Good afternoon Belinda Spillman - I certainly know the importance of a name and I make an effort to remember.  Now you give all the clue in your signature and person says they don't care when the overlook that.  I am happy with tent cards and name tags to make sure I don't forget.

I remember those tent cards to have our name displayed clearly.

LOL...my name gets changed to Sue, to Suzie, or just pronounced Suzanne. My response is simple - I don't reply.  And then when they get my attention, I will just say, "Oh, were you talking to me?  I'm sorry, I thought you said Sue.  I'm Susan."  With or without snark, depending on who it is.  LOL

Belinda I can't imagine you being a DOT!!  I do remember names when there's not  a lot of people.  Hard to remember all of them in CE classes that's why I have them fill out Name Cards to set on their table. I think by using their names it makes it much more personal - and they participate a lot more too.  As for my name, not many forget Anna Banana!!

No one would ever forget Anna Banana!  Even if your name were DOT!!!

Nobody likes their name to be mispronounced or called by the wrong name. Simply no-one! Especially not by the ex-girlfriend or ex-wifes name!!

Everyone of us wants to be called by our correct names. I used to dislike being called Deborah but now it doesn't bother me and I answer to any derivative of Deborah.

I have a terrible time remembering names, especially when I've met someone once many months ago. Or, when it's someone I knew only slightly and haven't seen them for 15 years.

One thing is nice - If I get mail addressed to Mr. Marte Cliff, I know it's a stranger and I don't have to bother opening it.

I have to make an effort to remember names, but seriously it does make a difference in how people feel. I get Casey and Kacey a lot back in emails and I think, "don't you see my name right there in my email signature? Not that hard to spell it correctly!" -Kasey

You'll love this story.  There's an agent i know with two names, just like me.  We work in the same office and she would also introduce herself using the two names, and explain how important her two names were.  It differentiated her from her sisters.

Well, whenever she would see me, she would simply call me Chris.  Somehow, coming from someone with two names herself, that was extra disrespectful to me.

Got her attention one day after she said, "Hi Chris," by giving her a , "Hi (insert first of two names here.)"    THAT got her attention.  "Oh no, my name is (two names.)"

All I did was smile and say, "I know. I have two names too."  Never been called anything but Chris Ann since when I see this person.

Ha ha.  Sometimes you just have to put it in their face.  On a recent email from someone I have been working with for 8 months, she called me Brenda.  Argh!  I replied with Hi Diane even though her name is Debbie.  LOL
