The Neighbourhood
McKernan is located just south of the main University of Alberta campus. It is bordered by University Avenue to the north, 109 Street to the east, Belgravia Road/72 Avenue to the south and the Belgravia neighbourhood to the west. The neighbourhood is popular with staff and students of the University and staff of the University Hospital. McKernan has quiet streets lined with mature elm trees. McKernan Splashpark and Skatepark is a popular neighbourhood feature.
McKernan was developed between 1945 and 1965, after McKernan Lake was drained. The area was named after John McKernan, a prominent businessman in Strathcona, whose family farm was located there in the late 19th century. John McKernan also founded the Princess Theatre, which remains a Strathcona landmark on Whyte Avenue.
The population of McKernan is approximately 2,800 and there are 1,400 residences. Most homes are single family and duplexes constructed in the 1950s and 1960s as well as newer infills.
Schools and Amenities
McKernan School dates from 1951 and offers English and French immersion programs from kindergarten through grade 9.
The community is served by the McKernan/Belgravia LRT station. A small neighbourhood commercial area is located at 76 Avenue and 115 Street.
