When I was in high school, isolated from the rest of the world overseas in Turkey, all we had were movies and music to keep us entertained.  I had a model railroad track, slot cars, models, and blocks.  The blocks, even though I had 'graduated' to erector sets, were fascinating and on those tile floors I would try to put several sets together and build them up as high as possible.  I also started my guitar habit...

But the movies -- especially horror movies -- I would go to like I wanted to get lost in a different world.  I hated campy ones.  I wanted to get hit by the scariest stuff they could dish out. I prepared myself mentally to get stone serious, psyched out.

When we lived in Greece there were a lot of outdoor theaters in neighborhoods.  Two of the first I watched when in grade school were: "Premature Burial" and the "Pit and the Pendulum".  I was hooked after that.  And at about 6 or 8 years old, scared out of my skin.

Those were the times of serious movies that were intended to scare the bejeebers out of you.  And they succeeded.  I was able to watch nearly every Hammer Film that came out in the late 50s and 60s, my favorites being unadulterated Gothic Horror.  Oh yes.  Christopher Lee was king of that genre.  He and Peter Cushing.

So, I dedicate the next 12 days to remembering not only these great films but ANY neat horror flick that AR folks might like to offer up as their favorite.  The favorite has to be a line or phrase from one of those memorable movies.  It can be from any year and genre, sci-fi to chain saw.  If you'd like to offer the context, great.

I will start with this line from Invasion of the Body Snatchers.  It's nearly the end of the movie and you don't know who has been 'converted' from the pods.  People are roaming the street and we are hoping our hero Donald Sutherland has not succumbed.

The line is (something like this):

"HHHHHHHHHCCCCCCCCCCTTHHHHAAAAAAAAA"

If you've forgotten this scene, here it is again:

OK, you're next!!
btw: I will assume a different avatar every day from now til Halloween...

Endre, you have to start with the classic ones from the 30s and 40s.  So what kind of movies did you like best?  Lee was rarely the good guy in any of his movies.  He refused to play Dracula after the second or third iteration.  Thanks

Ok Hannah, that's two of you now that don't like the genre.  Wolfman was pretty scary when it first came out.  Those guys knew how to do it right.  Vincent was quite a character, always cast as a shady guy.  You, Endre and James Dray need to get together!  Thanks

Morning John.

So far I've ever seen a horror movie that scared me.  After seeing it in real life, via my former profession.  Nothing Hollywood can come up with can top those days and memories

OK James, now I am really surprised.  If any more of you AR folks don't admit you are horror movie buffs I am going to take down this blog!  I take it, James, that you were in the medical profession.  I knew from way back when that I didn't have the stomach to go in that direction.  Glad you are doing something now that you really enjoy.  It takes all kinds doesn't it?

John- sorry but while I have seen a few, it is not my favorite genre. I did stand in line in the rain to see the midnight showing of The Exorcist when it came out in Houston. And after seeing Psycho, it took me months before I could take a shower again.

BTW- don't take down this post. You never know who likes horror movies out there.

Hi Kathy, I wish I'd seen Psycho on the big screen.  It was very very well done.  I did see The Exorcist in Texas when it first came out.  I don't think anyone expected to see what Linda Blair was going to do!  I remember the first two rows were full of teenagers making all sort of noise and heckling the screen.  In about 15 minutes it was dead quiet.

SO... everybody here: let's remember that time you were shocked, scared or amazed and what was that line that you will never forget.  Thanks!

John- I don't know that he spoke, but to this day Frankenstein...the original one...scares the s___out of me.

Yes I think Frankenstein was a scarier monster over Dracula -- at least from the originals done in the 30s in black and white.  They had a way of playing with an imagination, lighting, and Boris Karloff was superb.  He played in many other movies of the same genre.  One of my favorite lines is in I think the second one where he is in the hermit's house and is eating, drinking, and then smokes.  He says: "Smoke --- Good!"
