A Visit to Haleakalā in Maui, Hawaii
We recently spent some time in Maui and thoroughly enjoyed the drive from Ka’anapali (on the west side) to the top of Haleakalā, at 10,023 feet above sea level, and above the clouds, and about 2.5 hours from the resort condo where we were staying.
Views on the way up the mountain
Haleakalā is a "quiet" or dormant volcano (well it's been quiet for centuries but still considered active by scientists), and an incredible drive to the top with fabulous views. No, we did not opt for getting up at 3 am to drive and arrive in time for sunrise, which I hear is pretty spectacular. By the way IF you decide to do that a permit is now required to enter the park, I believe between 3 am and 7 am, in order to view the sunrise which is supposed to be sensational!
View at the top
If you’ve been, you know how spectacular this setting is (the summit is sacred to Native Hawaiians, and is home to several species that are found nowhere else). If not, it’s well worth the drive to the top (if you are adventurous you can take a van tour to the peak and then bicycle down).
They are right when they say the temperature is 20 degrees or so cooler at the summit – but then we were higher than we have even been with our feet on the ground. If you go, be aware there is no gas for quite some distance, no food, and emergency medical care, they say, is an hour away!
Once you arrive at the Haleakalā National Park (some distance after passing the small town of Kula) be aware the cost is $25 to enter (no cash – credit card only!). And also know this is a REALLY winding road, with dozens and dozens of switchbacks, slow speeds, and no guard rails. It adds to the excitement to where you are going! LOL
